Alejandro González Iñárritu, the two-time Academy Award-winning director of films likeBabelandThe Revenant, is currently in post-production of his latest film. The still officially untitled project featuresa star-studded castled by none other thanTom Cruise, whom Iñárritu has expressed nothing but praise for, and calls the experience of working with him “unprecedented.”
The mystery project is set to be released in October 2026, and it stars Cruise alongside Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Emma D’Arcy, Riz Ahmed, and Jesse Plemons, among others. The screenplay was written by Iñárritu alongside Mexican journalist Sabina Berman, and two of the director’s frequent collaborators, Alexander Dinelaris Jr. and Nicolás Giacobone.

TheBirdmandirector spoke to Deadline during a retrospective aboutAmores Perros(“Love’s a B**th” would be a proper translation), his film debut which shot him into stardom in the year 2000. The film was a notable addition to Cannes that year, and 25 years later, Iñárritu fondly recalls the reception that ithad at the festival. Additionally, Iñárritu was asked about his latest collaboration with Cruise during the interview. According to Deadline, the working title is “Judy,” and Iñárritu was kind enough to lift the veil and talk about his experience working alongsidetheTop Gunstar:

“I’m so excited. It was an incredible experience with Tom, Sandra Huller, Jesse Plemmons, with Riz Ahmed, but it’s a character-driven film mounted on the shoulders of Tom, which I knew was exactly the right person.”
Iñárritu didn’t provide any details about the plot, but he still found a way to keep everyone intrigued about the movie: “It was a very challenging film, you will see. It’s many borders of many things. Every film challenges me. I don’t like doing things that I’ve done already. This is something that we’ve never done, and it’s exciting as well.” The director also denied the rumor that the film portrays Cruise as a powerful man who believes he’s also a savior:

“No, the thing that I can tell you. This is a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It’s insane. He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so f*cking impressed and happy.
“He has an incredible sense of passion. It’s a brutal comedy. It’s a wild comedy of human nature. It’s scary and funny. It’s beautiful. I will start editing next week.”
