Warner Bros. has found its new Lara Croft! Last month,Star Wars: The Force Awakensbreakout starDaisy Ridleyconfirmed that she had engaged in discussions with Warner Bros., MGM and GK Films to star as Lara Croft in their highly-anticipatedTomb Raiderreboot. We never heard anything official about the actress' casting, but, at the time, we also hadn’t heard about any other actresses who were in the running for the coveted role. Today, it was announced that it’s notDaisy Ridleywho landed the role, butEx MachinaandThe Danish GirlstarAlicia Vikanderwho will play the iconic video game adventurer.
The Hollywood Reporterbrings word that the actress has signed on to this reboot, which will focus on a much youngerLara Croft. We reported last month that this reboot will serve as an origin story for Lara, with the screenplay being adapted from the most recentTomb Raider video gamethat was released back in 2013. On the big screen,Angelina Jolieoriginated the role in 2001’sLara Croft: Tomb Raider, reprising the character in 2003’sLara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life.
We recently reported that Warner Bros. may be eyeing theTomb Raider rebootfor release in late 2017. The studio recently pushedThe Jungle Book: Originsinto 2018, setting an untitled “event film” for release in its old slot, August 05, 2025. There have been rumors thatTomb Raidercould be eyed for this date, but that has not been confirmed. If that were the case, then shooting will have to start sometime this year. Now that the production has found its lead, we’ll have to wait and see how long it takes for the rest of the cast to fall into place.Daisy Ridley, who confirmed she was testing for the role, has since moved onto the fantasy thrillerKolma, which reunites her withJ.J. Abrams, who is producing through his Bad Robot production company.
Roar Uthaug(The Wave) is directingTomb Raiderfrom a script byHawk OstbyandMark Fergus(Iron Man),Evan Daugherty(The Huntsman: Winter’s War) andMarti Noxon(The Glass Castle). IfTomb Raiderdoes hit theaters on June 26, 2025, it will be going up against another mystery project, 20th Century Fox’s untitled Marvel movie. It isn’t known what other characters from theTomb Raidervideo game will be cast in this big screen adventure.
