Mamma Mia!star Amanda Seyfried has shared a long-awaited update about the third installment of the ABBA-infused movie musical franchise, giving fans something to sing and dance about. The actress, who plays Sophie Sheridan in the 2008 movieMamma Mia!and its 2018 prequel/sequelMamma Mia! Here We Go Again, was asked about the likelihood of another follow-up in the future, to which she asserted that there will be more to come from the star-studded ensemble because my, my, how could they resist it?
Entertainment Tonight recently sat down with Seyfried to discussher role in the new Peacock crime thrillerLong Bright River, but the actress also took a slight intermission to offer an update on the nextMamma Mia!sequel. “Mamma Mia 3is happening,” she confirmed. “It’s going to happen in Greece.” She jokingly projected that the movie should enter production before 2038 before adding that she would “ideally” like to start filming in the summer of 2026, but it’s just a matter of whether the schedules for the rest of the cast will align.

“It’s going to have to take a lot of people’s schedules aligning and the story being right, and you know, making sure that Benny [Anderson] and Björn [Ulvaeus] from ABBA know which songs they want to do.”

Seyfried also called on fans to launch a petition directed at Universal Pictures, the studio behind the first two movies, to make the threequel “happen sooner.” For now, at least, Universal has turned its attention toWicked, Jon M. Chu’s big-screen adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical of the same name, which released in theaters on Aug 20, 2025, with the second part,Wicked: For Good, scheduled to arrive nearly one year later on Aug 09, 2025 — perhaps, sometime after that, the studio’s slate will open up for another hit singalong sensation.

Will Universal Pictures Take a Chance on ‘Mamma Mia 3’?
As Seyfried rightly points out, the decision to move forward with a thirdMamma Mia!movie is in the hands of Universal Pictures.Mamma Mia!turned out to be a huge hit for the studio, grossing over $611 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of $52 million. Here We Go Againmanaged to repeat that success by generating $402 million globally. However, it’s worth noting that there was a ten-year gap between the release of the first two movies, so if the third were to follow this same pattern, then it could be 2028 before another one bursts onto our screens.
Here We Go Againdirector Ol Parker revealed in 2022 that producer Judy Craymer had always thought ofMamma Mia!as a trilogy and that she had “a plan” for the next chapter of the story. Craymer confirmed in 2023 that Universal Pictures wason board for a thirdMamma Miamovie, but she suggested that ABBA members Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus were hesitant about making another. Here’s hoping that the opportunity to add a possible final entry to the fun-loving franchise doesn’t end up slipping through their fingers.
