Neil Gaiman delivered theGood Omensteaser trailer this afternoon at NYCC and took part in the panel for the upcoming series. Yesterday, the author took part in theAmerican Godspanel, which was moderated by comedian Patton Oswalt.Good Omensis a six-part television series based on the Fantasy Award nominated 1990 novel Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. The adaptation has been in the works for years, but will finally debut in 2019.
During theNYCCpanel forGood Omens, Neil Gaiman talked about the nearly three-decade journey to adapt the book, with even a few failed movie attempts along the way. Gaiman said that he and Terry Pratchett thought that a TV series would be the best route to take, but admitted that finding someone to help write the show was tough. “We went looking for writers, and everyone went, No, it’s too weird,” according to the author.
After attempting to find writers to adaptGood Omens, Terry Pratchett decided that Neil Gaiman would be the best person to take on the job. Pratchett wrote Gaiman a letter, stating that he didn’t have much time to live and that he wanted to see the show before “the lights go out,” which put a fire under Gaiman to get the adaptation written and sent off to networks. Pratchett passed away not long after writing the letter, which only made Gaiman more committed to the project stating, “So now it was a last request, and I’ve seen it through.”
Good Omensfeatures Michael Sheen (Masters of Sex) and David Tennant (Jessica Jones) as angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley, respectively. The cast also includes Jon Hamm, Jack Whitehall, Michael McKean, Adria Arjona, Nina Sosanya, Ned Dennehy, Ariyon Bakare, Mark Gatiss, Derek Jacobi, Nick Offerman, and Miranda Richardson. After being accustomed to life on Earth, Aziraphale and Crowley seek to prevent the coming of the antichrist and with it the final battle between Heaven and Hell, each for their own motives in what looks like a great dark comedy from the teaser trailer that was released today.
In January 2017, it was announced that Amazon Video had given a green-light an adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’sGood Omens. Each episode will be one hour in length and premieres on Amazon Video first. The show will then broadcast on BBC Two in the United Kingdom. An official release date has not been announced, but the six-part show will premiere on the streaming platform sometime in 2019. The series is currently in production and moving along a lot smoother that Gaiman’sAmerican Gods, which airs on the Starz network, which has seen some snags and delays along the way.
