FX has released the latest poster forAmerican Horror StorySeason 9, and it’s an awesome throwback to the 1980s slasher movies. The poster looks like it could easily be spotted at a video store in the 80s, just begging to be rented and watched with a fresh pizza and friends on a Friday night. The horror anthology series is changing things up yet again for season 9 and is taking viewers to the fictional Camp Redwood where a masked killer is stalking the young characters.

From the promotional material we’ve seen forAmerican Horror Story: 1984, Ryan Murphy is taking the year 1984 and the art of slasher movies very seriously. FX chairman John Landgraf admitted that he never has any idea what Murphy is going to do with a new season of the anthology series. He says, “(Murphy) comes up with something I’d never seen coming, and I never know what he is going to come up with.” Landgraf continued, “Literally, I don’t find out until he calls and says ‘OK, here is what we are going to do for the next cycle.'”

American Horror Story: 1984will not feature the show’slead actress Sarah Paulsonsince she is already starring in two other of Ryan Murphy’s projects,Ratchedon Netflix andImpeachment: American Crime Storyon FX. With that being said, John Landgraf is confident in the story and the idea that Murphy has come up with this time around. He explains.

“Ryan always has been so good deconstructing genres in a really fun way; this sort of deconstructs the classic summer camp horror trope, and therefore it’s really oriented around a group of young adults.”

As for the vibe ofAmerican Horror Story: 1984, John Landgraf says it’s “a lot of fun,” which isn’t necessarily how one would describe past seasons of the hit anthology series. With that being said, all of the promotional material released thus far has all been pretty playful with some darkness easing in. From the looks of things, we’re gettinga tribute to the great slasher movies of the 1980s, but nothing Ryan Murphy does is ever really that simple, so we’re all expecting some pretty big surprises.

However, even ifRyan Murphyand crew go for a straight homage to the classic 1980s slashers, horror fans more than likely will not complain. Emma Roberts, Cody Fern, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman, and John Carroll Lynch are all returning forAmerican Horror Story: 1984, which also sees newcomers to the series. Gus Kenworthy, Zach Villa (Destroyer), and DeRon Horton (Dear White People),Gleestar Matthew Morrison, andPoseactress Angelica Ross round out the rest of the cast.American Horror Story: 1984will return for its ninth season on September 18th, exclusively on FX. you’re able to check out the awesome 80s throwback poster art for the series below, thanks to theAmerican Horror Story Twitteraccount.
