At this point, seeingNicolas Cagein a low-budget movie where he is playing a totally whacky character is nothing new, but his latest effort looks to be a cut above the rest of his recent direct-to-video work. A new trailer for his upcoming comedyArmy of Onehas been released and it is absolutely bonkers. What’s more is that the movie is based on a true story, or at least loosely based anyway.
Entertainment Weeklyrecently debuted the new trailer forArmy of One, which featuresNicolas Cageas Gary Faulkner, a man who received a message from God and decided to go hunt down Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan with a sword. The movie is being directed byLarry Charles, whose past credits includeBoratandThe Dictator. In case you aren’t already convinced this movie is something to consider checking out, here is the synopsis forArmy of One.
“Gary Faulkner (Cage) is an ex-con, unemployed handyman, and modern dayDon Quixotewho receives a vision from God (Brand) telling him to capture Osama Bin Laden. In recent yearsNicolas Cagehas been taking on seemingly any project that comes his way, the majority of which wouldn’t be accused of being any good. That makes it easy to forget that he is anAcademy Award winning actor. Not thatArmy of Onelooks like on Oscar worthy movie or anything, butNicolas Cagedefinitely looks to be swinging for the fences this time around and isn’t just playing some version of himself like we often see. It may even seem a little strange that this movie isn’t getting some sort of theatrical release after seeing the trailer.
Outside ofNicolas Cageplaying the lead in this bizarre real-life story,Army of Onehas a pretty promising cast.Wendi McLendon-CoveyofReno 911fame is playing the female lead in the movie, which seems solid.Rainn Wilson(The Office),Will Sasso(Mad TV) andPaul Scheer(The League) are also set to star. Let us not forget to mention thatRussell Brandis playing God, which seems oddly appropriate.Army of Oneis being released on November 4 digitally, with a DVD and Blu-Ray release set for Nov. 15.
