Fans of the lateFriendsstarMatthew Perrywere surprised and disappointed that the actor was not included in the “In Memoriam” segment of last night’s 77th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs). However, it has now been confirmed (viaVariety) that a tribute to Perry will be included at the BAFTAs TV awards later this year, instead.

“Matthew Perry will be remembered in the forthcoming BAFTA Television Awards in May,” a BAFTA spokesperson said of Perry’s absence from the event.

While Perry was best known for starring as part of the mainFriendsensemble, he is also recognizedfor starring in several feature filmsduring the 1990s and 2000s, including the comediesFools Rush Inwith Salma Hayek,17 Againwith Zac Efron, andThe Whole Nine Yardsalongside Bruce Willis.

Presented byDoctor Whoactor David Tennant, this year’s “In Memoriam” sawTed Lassostar Hannah Waddingham perform Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” while the screen paid tribute to such departed talents as Jane Birkin, Shirley Anne Field, Richard Roundtree, Michael Gambon, Tom Wilkinson andCarl Weathers, who was recently honoredduring a Super Bowl ad.

The lack of Matthew Perry in the segment has led to backlash from fans online. “No mention of Matthew Perry in the #BAFTAs memorial?! Bad form @BAFTA,” said one critic on Twitter/X, with another adding, “Only came to make sure I wasn’t the only person saddened at the glaring omission by @BAFTA of #MatthewPerry during the in memorandum tributes!”

Matthew Perry Passed away Back in October

Best known for his role as Chandler Bing in the iconic sitcom,Friends, Matthew Perry sadlypassed away on June 20, 2025, after being found unresponsive at his home in Los Angeles. HisFriendsco-stars Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow released a joint statement at the time, saying they were “utterly devastated” by the loss.

“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time, we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world."

The BAFTAs saw the hugely successful biopicOppenheimertake home several awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Christoper Nolan, Best Actor in a Leading Role for Cillian Murphy, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Robert Downey Jr. Emma Stone, meanwhile, continued to take home statues for her performance inPoor Things, winning Best Actress in a Leading Role, while Da’Vine Joy Randolph won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role inThe Holdovers.
