We’ve already seen both official costumes forBen Affleck’s Batman andHenry Cavill’s Superman in Warner Bros.‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Since this highly-anticipatedsuperhero moviepits these iconic characters against each other on the big screen for the first time, the costumes had to be special. DirectorZack Snyderbrought hisMan of Steelcostume designerMichael Wilkinsonback for this follow-up. While speaking to People’s Choice, the costume designer offered some new details about his work, which spanned a massive 18-months throughout both pre-production and production. When asked how both Batman and Superman’s suits are different to what we’ve seen before, the costume designer had this to say, while adding details about what the director wanted to see withGal Gadot’s Wonder Woman costume.

“We tweaked theSupermansuit only slightly from our suit fromMan of Steel. We streamlined plus sharpened the details of the costume a little to suit the more earthly (less alien) context of this film. The batsuit is a complete 180 degree turn from the previous film incarnations - ourBatman’s power comes from his incredible physical strength and fighting skills, not from armor. The directorZack Snyderwanted him to look as much like the comic book version as possible - to be respectful to the original source. As for theWonder Womansuit, well she has never been seen in a film before, so there was nothing to compare it to! There is of course the costume from the TV show. Zack wanted our character to be a fierce and intimidating warrior - gritty, battle-scarred and immortal.”

While fans have surely been poring over the official images of these costumes for months, since they were first revealed, the costume designer teased that both eagle-eyed fans will notice a few special details about Superman and Wonder Woman’s costumes. He also added that Batman’s gloves include with brass knuckles. Here’s whatMichael Wilkinsonhad to say.

“Zack had a great idea to have some Kryptonian script subliminally included in the details of the suit, so we made that happen. There is ancient Greek script on Wonder Woman’s weapons too. My favorite details of the batsuit are the brass knuckles on the gloves.”

Michael Wilkinsonadded thatBen Affleckwas hooked from the second he tried on the Batman suit, and that he felt powerful and intimidating while wearing it. He also teased that it was hard to getJason Momoaout of hisAquamancostume, and all of the superhero suits will be going on a massive publicity tour all around the world. What do you think of these new details?
