Martin Zandvliet directed the crime thrillerThe Outsider, and the film was released on Netflix in 2018. The film takes place in 1954, close to a decade after World War II. Leto plays Nick Lowelll, a prisoner in Osaka among several Yakuza criminals. Although Lowell is not Japanese, he finds himself deep into the underground world of Japanese crime after a series of events starting with his time in prison. The film is filled with suspense, violence, and action from beginning to end. At the same time, it gives you a deep look into the world of organized crime in Japan post-World War II. Leto gives a fantastic performance filled with intensity and passion. The film also showcases the deep history of Japanese culture and the politics within the Yakuza. The film is currentlystreaming on Netflix.
3Suicide Squad
Although Leto’sperformance as Jokerin David Ayer’sSuicide Squadmight not be for everyone, there is no doubt that Leto gave it his all to create a fascinating and entertaining character. At the same time, his character had minimal screen time, making it a great example of scene-stealing. The film focuses on a group of villains from the DC Universe who are put to the task of saving the world against a threat to humanity. The film has several A-list actors including Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Viola Davis. Although it may not be a perfect superhero film, it does entertain from start to finish, with a good blend of comedy and action. Leto gives us an interesting take on Joker with his tattoo-covered body, silver teeth, and mob-boss persona.

2Blade Runner 2049
Denis Villeneuve’sBlade Runner 2049was a monumental achievement in filmmaking that, once again, proved his sheer capabilities as a director. The film follows a Blade Runner named K who finds himself in over his head after he uncovers a dark secret in a dystopian version of future Los Angeles. This leads him on a journey to unite with a former Blade Runner named Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), known from the original film,Blade Runner. Leto plays a main antagonist known as Niander Wallace who is the CEO of the Wallace Corporation. Leto gives a chilling performance that is quite effective despite the lack of screen time. The film, as a whole, is a brilliant piece of science fiction filled with groundbreaking special effects from beginning to end. At the same time, Roger Deakins' cinematography broke the mold for its innovation. Leto proved, once again, that he is unstoppable as a villain, even if it is a minor character.
1Dallas Buyers Club
In Jean-Marc Vallée’sDallas Buyers Club, Leto gives the greatest performance of his career as the charming, yet heartbreaking, character of Rayon. Rayon assists Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey) in forming a club that gives HIV/AIDS patients access to drugs that were not approved by the FDA in the 1980s. The film, as a whole, is a fascinating look into healthcare and the world of AIDS during the 1980s. The chemistry between Leto and McConaughey is top-notch and they each went on to win Academy Awards for their performances. Leto completely embodies the persona of Rayan through his emotion and physicality. The film is fantastic from beginning to end, and Vallée was unquestionably the perfect filmmaker to take on the project. Although it may be a tearjerker, there are several uplifting moments that highlight the power of love, friendship, and courage.
