The Beanie Bubble (July 28)
Shifting gears, this movie closely examines one of the biggest pop culture fads of the 90s: theimmortal Beanie Baby.
Based on Zac Bissonnette’s bookThe Great Beanie Baby Bubble: Mass Delusion and the Dark Side of Cute, this film illustrates the so-called “dark side” of the smiling, plush stuffed animal industry. College dropout Ty Warner established the brand in the early 90s with no significant distribution or advertising plan.
However, Warner struck gold, as the stuffed babies skyrocketed in popularity thanks in large part to collectors. Beanie Babies have been called one of the first modern Internet-era consumer crazes. Those who experienced the 90s will remember that the craze died out just as fast as it began, with the stuffed critters going from priceless to worthless practically overnight.
