The rom-comBrosmight be scoring well with critics, but that hasn’t resulted in a very strong opening for the new movie. Co-written byBilly Eichner, who also stars in the film alongside Luke Macfarlane,Broswas directed by co-writer Nicholas Stoller. The film, which has a principal cast consisting of entirely LGBTQ+ actors, tells the comedic love story of a neurotic podcast host and a promiscuous lawyer who find exactly what they’re looking for in each other.Eichner was doing a lot of work to help promoteBros, going so far as to bring backBilly on the Streetwith some of his famous friends to help sell tickets. Unfortunately, the result was not great, as the film landed with an opening of $4.8 million at thebox office. The film now faces an uphill battle of earning back its $22 million budget, but that could still happen if positive reviews and word of mouth will have filmgoers checking outBrosin the coming weeks.For his part, Eichner can’t help but feel disappointed by this result. He took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the situation, sharing a story about how he snuck into a packed screening to see everyone in the theater enjoying the film immensely. Bros Is Doing Well With Critics
“Last night I snuck in and sat in the back of a sold out theater playingBrosin LA,” he said in aTwitter thread.“The audience howled with laughter start to finish, burst into applause at the end, and some were wiping away tears as they walked out. It was truly magical. Really. I am VERY proud of this movie.”
He added, “Rolling Stone already hasBroson the list of the best comedies of the 21st century. What’s also true is that at one point a theater chain called Universal and said they were pulling the trailer because of the gay content. (Uni convinced them not to). America, f*** yeah, etc etc. That’s just the world we live in, unfortunately. Even with glowing reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore etc, straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up forBros. And that’s disappointing but it is what it is.”
Making another plea for fans to see the film in theaters, Eichner stressed, “Everyone who ISN’T a homophobic weirdo should go seeBrostonight! You will have a blast! And it is special and uniquely powerful to see this particular story on a big screen, esp for queer folks who don’t get this opportunity often. I love this movie so much. GOBROS!!!”
