Following three years of retirement inBosch: Legacy, popular TV detectiveHarry Bosch (Titus Welliver) is riding off into the sunset for good. On June 05, 2025, it was announced thatBosch: Legacyis officially ending with the third and final season, poised to premiere on Amazon Freevee in March 2025. The announcement was made onInstagramby crime novelist Michael Connelly, whose series of crime novels have served as the dramatic blueprint for the hit TV proceduralBoschand its spinoffBosch: Legacy.
While some fans are sure to lament Amazon’s decision, endingBosch: Legacyafter Season 3 is a wise decision for several reasons. After 10 years of homicide investigations,Boschran its course on televisionand started to become a bit stale and redundant. As Harry retired from the LAPD and took a backseat to his daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz) to shine inBosch: Legacy,the show shifted focus away from the main character while also softening his personality. As such, it only makes sense to retireBoschand maintain his beloved legacy.

Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch has retired from the LAPD and works as a private investigator. Defense attorney Honey “Money” Chandler has him work on some cases for her. His daughter, Maddie, navigates her first days as a patrol officer with the LAPD, working from Hollywood Station, where her father used to be assigned. Bosch investigates businessman Carl Rogers, who previously hired a hitman to kill Chandler.
What Is Bosch: Legacy About?
Developed as a sequel toBoschby Michael Connelly, Eric Overmyer, and Tom Bernardo,Bosch: Legacycontinues the police investigations of the gruff and grizzled Hieronymous “Harry” Bosch. The first series lasted on Prime Video for seven seasons and 68 episodes from 2014 to 2021.The police procedural TVplot concerns homicide investigations led by Bosch, a morally compromised LAPD officer who bends the law to put criminals away.
While examining various killings around Hollywood, Bosch works with influential attorney Honey Chandler (Mimi Rogers), a partial ally and adversary who uses each other to remain out of legal trouble. The more criminal cases Bosch takes, the more autonomy he requires as a renegade with his sense of right and wrong. Despite respecting the rules, Bosch is at its most compelling when Harry massages the law and nearly crosses the line to put criminals away.
However, as time passes, Bosch’s maturation leads to a much softer side shown inBosch: Legacy, where he retires from the LAPD to becomea private investigatorand professional mentor to his daughter Maddie. As Harry slides into the background,Bosch: Legacyshifts the focus to Maddie and her time climbing the ranks as a rookie LAPD officer, where she becomes romantically entangled with her police partner, Rico Perez (Anthony Gonzales). By Season 2 ofBosch: Legacy, the entire plot surrounds Maddie’s kidnapping and PTSD, rendering Harry more of a supporting parental counselor than the leading detective fans have come to know and love.
Bosch: Legacy Ending After Season 3 Is a Good Thing
A show remaining on the air too long runs the risk of becoming repetitive and suffering a dramatic decline. After two seasons,Bosch: Legacyis flirting with such an overstayed welcome, making the third season the perfect end-point.Bosch: LegacySeason 2 ended ona dramatic cliffhangerhinting at Harry’s potential involvement in the murder of Maddie’s kidnapper, Kurt Dockweiler (David Denman). Maddie suspects her father may have crossed the legal line one too many times, something the upcoming third and final season should resolve with satisfying closure.
Every Season of ‘Bosch’ & ‘Bosch: Legacy,’ Ranked
The Bosch shows have become a beloved (and underrated) crime franchise over the last decade.
WhileBosch: Legacyhas yet to jump the shark completely, the show is not only shifting the drama from Harry to Maddie, it’s also becoming a bit too redundant to warrant its continuation. As Harry recedes into the background to enjoy a retired life, the show veers too far from the successful formula that made the original series so popular.IfBosch: Legacycontinuedbeyond Season 3, it would focus more on Maddie’s traumatic kidnapping and how she balances her emotional healing with her increased professional responsibilities at work and romantic dalliance outside of it. Moreover, the show would gradually phase Harry out of the picture and brighten the spotlight on Maddie.
Of course, the cancelation ofBosch: Legacywas not a decision made in a vacuum. The ending of the show is meant to dovetail into the next chapter in theBoschuniverse,a new untitled spinoff series starring Maggie Q as Renee Ballard. A key character featured in Michael Connelly’s novel series, Renee Ballard, is a tough, intelligent LAPD detective also set to be introduced inBosch: Legacy’s final episode. Passing the baton to Ballard makes all the sense in the world for Harry, who can walk away from his dangerous investigations and enjoy retirement with a clean conscience.
What Is the Untitled Renee Ballard Project About?
Slated for a 10-episode run in 2025,the untitled Renee Ballard TV series will air on Prime Video and Amazon Freevee. As Ballard investigates cold cases in Los Angeles, she leads a cash-strapped volunteer unit advised by her former partner, Thomas Laffont (John Carroll Lynch). Additional cast members include Victoria Moroles, Michael Mosley, Amy Hill, Rebecca Field, Courtney Taylor, and more.Boschfans can rest easy knowing thatTitus Welliver will appearin at least one episode of the upcoming spinoff. According to Connelly in his Instagram post:
“I’m happy to announce that the third season ofBosch: Legacywill premiere on Prime [Video] in March. I think it’s our best yet. It will also be the last season, bringing to a fitting close a 10 season run with this character, played so well by Titus Welliver. But fear not, we are currently in production on the Renee Ballard show. And if you know anything about my books, then you know you have not seen the last of Harry Bosch!”
EndingBosch: Legacynow is a brilliant way of saying goodbye to the main character while setting up Ballard’s quest for justice. Legacy had nearly run out of steam and started to grow stale in the transition from Harry’s investigations to Maddie’s personal and professional life. With Ballard assuming the mantle, Harry can peacefully ride into the L.A. sunset and give Maddie the emotional support she needs with undivided attention. It’s a win-win across the board, including fans of Connelly’s extended crime novels.Bosch: Legacyis available to stream onAmazon Freevee.
