The Marvelsis still over a year away from arriving in cinemas and that means we know virtually nothing at all about the plot of the film or even who some of the stars are playing. One of those actors isZawe Ashton, who joined the cast earlier this year as the film’s main antagonist, but we don’t know who that is, andBrie Larsonhas been teasing fans with a new photo of herself with Ashton and the comment, “Marvel fans, start your theories.”
Everyone knows that fans of theMCUlove nothing more than throwing around ideas about who and what could be coming next in the ongoing Marvel saga, so Larson instigating the debate means that there will soon be a whole host of theoretical villains that Ashton could be playing in theCaptain Marvelsequel. With Carol Danvers’ hero alter-ego being one of the most powerful individuals in the MCU, the question is more which villain will make a worthy opponent to the combined might of Captain Marvel and her fellow heroesMs. Marveland Monica Rambeau.

Larson’s Captain Marvel was recently seen in the post-credit scene ofShang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Ringsalong with Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. After making her debut as Carol Danvers in her 2019 solo movie, Brie Larson was back to help the fight against Thanos inAvengers: Endgame. After taking on one of the biggest bads the MCU has faced so, it is obvious that something mighty will be coming down the line in theCaptain Marvelsequel to challenge the intergalactic Avenger. As well as Larson,WandaVision’s Teyonah Parris will be reprising her role as Monica Rambeau after gaining cosmic powers from the magical barrier used by Wanda Maximoff to protect her little world in the series, and Iman Vellani will be playing Ms. Marvel for a second time after appearing in her own introductory TV series next year.
There has been virtually no marketing yet forThe Marvelsand that is not surprising considering we have only just seen the first footage fromDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesswhich is released this coming May. Based on the current timeframes of the upcoming releases from Marvel, it is likely that the first time we see a teaser for the film formerly known asCaptain Marvel 2, won’t be until sometime around the release ofBlack Panther: Wakanda Foreverin November next year.
So that means that there will be plenty of time for all of those theories about Zawe Ashton’s villain to be fully explored. Some suggestions have already included well known adversaries of Captain Marvel, such as Moonstone or Queen Veranke, who would possibly tieThe Marvelsto the upcomingSecret InvasionDisney+ series, and we know how Marvel Studios like a good connecting tie-in. However, with a number of characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe being gender-swapped in recent years, there are not just female villains to be considered in the list of characters Ashton could end up playing.
