Who’s ready forCall Me by Your Name 2? The Academy Award-winningCall Me By Your Nameis getting a sequel and directorLuca Guadagninohas revealed the first details. Of all the awards season movies, it didn’t really seem as thoughCall Me By Your Namewas the most likely to turn into a franchise, but that seems to be the way things are going. For now, it’s just one sequel, but Guadagnino has indicated in the past that there could be more movies in this saga, if you can call it that, depending on how this all shakes out. At the present time, we know for sure that the filmmaker is committed to the sequel, which he’s currently working on.
Prior to the Oscars over the weekend, theCall Me By Your Namedirector revealed some details about the upcoming sequel in an interview. The movie was up for three Oscars, including Best Picture, and ultimately walked away with one for Best Adapted Screenplay. Luca Guadagnino says that they’re “conceiving” the story now and that it will take place a handful of years after the events of the first movie, while also saying thatOliver(Armie Hammer) and Elio (Timothee Chalamet) are going to travel the world with one another. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“I’m already conceiving the story with André Aciman, and it’s gonna happen five or six years afterwards. It’s gonna be a new movie, a different tone…They’re gonna go around the world.”
Unfortunately, screenwriter James Ivory, who became the oldest Oscar winner (89) in history for his work on theCall Me By Your Namescreenplay, won’t be returning to work on the sequel. However, bothArmie HammerandTimothée Chalamet, who was nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards for his highly-praised performance, are expected to return. It would be hard to imagine moving forward without them on board. As Luca Guadagnino tells it, they had a great time making the first movie, which is partially why this sequel is happening at all.
“Apart from the fact that it rained for 28 days out of 30 of (shooting), so it was very humid, we had a great time. It was wonderful, ‘cause it was really like a family, a huge familybeing togetherfor long holiday. It was great.”
Call Me By Your Nameboasts an outstanding 96 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but has only made $32 million worldwide. That said, it doesn’t seem like the most expensive movie to make and should have a pretty long shelf life, thanks to the awards season love and praise. That could help justifyCall Me By Your Name 2, which isn’t the official title. The movie doesn’t have a release date yet. Who knows? Maybe this could wind up being like Richard Linklater’sBeforetrilogy, where we catch up with Oliver and Elio every handful of years.
