After making the international hitEasy Money, directorDaniel Espinosamade his American film debut with 2012’sSafe House. The filmmaker followed up that action-thriller with this year’sChild 44, which is currently available on Digital HD before theBlu-rayandDVDrelease on August 4 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Today we have an exclusive preview which highlights the directorial style of theChild 44filmmaker. And it proves he’s certainly a filmmaker to watch in the future.

Tom Hardy,Academy Awardnominee Gary Oldman andNoomi Rapacestar in the riveting and politically charged serial-killer dramaChild 44, which made waves when it hit theaters earlier this year. Based on the first novel of the international best-selling trilogy by Tom Rob Smith and produced by the acclaimedRidley Scott, the nail-biting story is written for the screen by Richard Price. The film features a stellar supporting cast that includesJoel Kinnaman,Paddy Considine,Jason ClarkeandVincent Cassel.

Set in 1953 Soviet Russia,Child 44chronicles the crisis of conscience for secret police agent Leo Demidov (Tom Hardy), who loses status, power and home when he refuses to denounce his own wife, Raisa (Noomi Rapace), as a traitor. Exiled from Moscow to a grim provincial outpost, Leo and Raisa join forces with General Mikhail Nesterov (Gary Oldman) to track down a serial killer who preys on young boys. Their quest for justice threatens a system-wide cover-up enforced by Leo’s psychopathic rival Vasili, who insists “There is no crime in Paradise.”

The home entertainment release ofChild 44will include a “Reflections of History” featurette that looks behind-the-scenes at the film crew’s work recreating the 1950s Soviet Union. TheChild 44 Blu-rayandDVDwill be available for the suggested retail price of $19.98 and $24.99, respectively.Child 44debuted in just a limited theatrical release this spring, but theBlu-rayandDVDrelease will give fans around the world to check out this rivetingpot boiler.

Daniel Espinosais attached to directBlood on Snowfor Warner Bros., which hasLeonardo DiCaprioattached to star, andBoston Strongfor 20th Century Fox. It isn’t clear which of these projects will move ahead first, but it’s clear the Swedish filmmaker certainly has a bright future ahead of him with these two highly-anticipated projects.
