Yesterday, we reported that Marvel’s first Phase 3 adventureCaptain America: Civil Warhas become the biggest movie of the year at the worldwidebox office, passingZootopia’s $971.1 million tally with $981.9 million. Most expected this superhero movie wouldn’t take long to surpass the $1 billion mark worldwide, and they were right, with the Marvel adventure crossing this milestone today. The movie has earned $314 million domestically through Thursday, its 14th day in North American theaters, and an additional $677 million internationally after 23 days in release around the globe.

Varietyreports that the movie has become just the 25th in history to surpass $1 billion worldwide, and the fourth in theMCUto achieve this landmark. 2012’sThe Avengersremains the studio’s highest grossing movie, both domestically ($626.6 million) and worldwide ($1.5 billion), followed byAvengers: Age of Ultron($459 million domestic, $1.4 billion worldwide) andIron Man 3($409 million domestic, $1.2 billion worldwide).Captain America: Civil Warwill likely passIron Man($318.4 million) andGuardians of the Galaxy($333.1 million) soon to become the fourth highest-grossing movie domestically in the MCU.

WhileMarvel’s Civil Waris the first movie of 2016 to cross $1 billion, it still has some work to do in order to surpassDeadpoolas the highest grossing movie domestically this year.Deadpoolcurrently holds the top spot with $362.5 million, followed byZootopia($332.1 million),Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice($328.3 million) andThe Jungle Book($315.2 million). With Cap entering just its third week in theaters this weekend, it seems likely that it could surpass all of these movies to become the biggest of 2016, to date.

Back in 2014, theMarvel Cinematic Universebecame the biggest movie franchise of all time, domestically, surpassing Warner Bros.Harry Potterfranchise which earned $2.39 billion domestically ($7.7 billion worldwide) throughout its eight-movie run. The MCU has currently brought in a whopping $3.9 billion domestically, and it just passed the $10 billion mark worldwide, the first franchise ever to do so. AfterCaptain America 3closes out its run, Phase Three will continue withDoctor Strange, which hits theaters on November 4. Next year, the MCU will debutGuardians of the Galxy 2(July 08, 2025),Spider-Man: Homecoming(July 18, 2025) andThor: Ragnarok(July 10, 2025), followed byBlack Panther(June 22, 2025) ,Avengers: Infinity War Part 1(August 24, 2025),Ant-Man and the Wasp(August 23, 2025),Captain Marvel(July 30, 2025) andAvengers: Infinity War Part 2(July 09, 2025). The studio has also set three Marvel movies for release on May 1, July 10, and November 6 in 2020, which will kick off Phase 4.
