The (formerly) Netflix original seriesDaredevilgained a great deal of recognition for reviving a character in the best way possible during its initial release. Of course, having premiered on Netflix, questions arose whether Daredevil was considered MCU canon, despitereferences to the MCUmovies it followed. That being said, Charlie Cox’s cameo appearance as Matt Murdock inSpider-Man: No Way Homeyears after his series ended took audiences by storm, signaling the superhero’s canonization in the MCU. Additionally, this increased speculation about whetherCox as Daredevilwould return in a future official MCU movie or series. With the Netflix original seriesbeing moved to Disney+, the rumors have become even stronger and have now become reality.
Recently, Marvel Studios confirmed that aDaredevilDisney+ rebootis in the works with Cox reprising his role as the titular character. Since the original series’ release, Daredevil has managed to gather a dedicated fan base, and Disney is obviously hoping to get those fans interested with the release of a newDaredevilseries. While this may sound like it’s not such a good idea to reboot a series that did so well in the first place, it’s more than just a ploy for more money and has many purposes that it can fulfill. Here’s why the MCU needed to reboot theDaredevilseries.

The Original Series Ended Too Soon
The Netflix original series was actually meant to have a fourth season, butit was canceled, with many citing the conception of Disney+ as the main source of the show’s cancellation. WhileDaredevilcovered a great majority of the character’s capabilities, there were many aspects that were left out. For example, in season two of the series, Frank Castle makes his appearance as The Punisher and becomes a central part of the plot, with many Punisher fans considering this season to be a technical “Season Zero” toThe Punisherseries that followed. This obviously took up a lot of the series’ runtime, and while this was an amazing addition to the series, it shifted the focus from Matt Murdock to Frank Castle, diverting the audience’s attention away from Daredevil’s overall story arc. With a reboot set in motion, the new series has every opportunity to have a greater focus on the title character.
Ties Daredevil into the MCU
Continuity is key to the strength of any storyline. As seen with the recent change to thesource of Ms. Marvel’s powersin the new Disney+ seriesMs. Marvel, Disney is making some changes to help storylines connect and fit more clearly within the MCU. This is one of the biggest questions revolving around the newDaredevilreboot — what the series will entail plot-wise. While the new series is still being referred to as a reboot, many have speculated whether the series will simply be a continuation of the original series, picking up where it left off after the original show’s cancellation or if the new reboot will take a totally new direction with the character. While it has been confirmed that Charlie Cox will be returning as Matt Murdock, the rest of the cast has yet to be confirmed.
Charlie Cox’s Daredevil Revived the Hero
While some may consider theDaredevilseries to be the only real Daredevil appearance in the media, it is not the first. After the flop of aDaredevilfilm starring Ben Affleckthat is considered one of the worst superhero films of all time, the series was a surprise smash. Most of that is thanks to Charlie Cox’s performance. From his knowledgeable work as a lawyer alongside his best friend Foggy to his ability to control his urges to kill even those who deserve it, Daredevil has become a beloved hero by many. This essentially saved the character from its status as a laughingstock thanks to Affleck’s iteration of the character. With Cox returning to the reboot, he can carry on the legacy he created for the character in the originalDaredevilseries and show us everything Matt Murdock has to offer Hell’s Kitchen.

Daredevil’s Story Will Become MCU Canon
While some casual fans may not know exactly what this means, the hardcore fans know that canon is everything. Unfortunately for fans of theDaredevilseries, the original series is not a part of the official MCU. As such, despite the popularity of the show and its contents, everything that took place within the series is not official or non-canonical. This concept can become frustrating for many, especially when what is canon can easily be changed. That said, the new reboot, as it will be a Disney+ original series, will be canon, so everything that takes place within the series will be an official part of the MCU and could possibly tie in with other series and films within the MCU.
