Sgt. Rockseemed to have been cut down before it even got into the fray at DC Studios. Reports suggested that despite recruitingThe Penguinstar Colin Farrell for the lead role, the company had decided not to move forward with the production due to unforeseen hiccups.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios was not moving forward with Luca Guadagnino’sSgt. Rockwith Colin Farrell in the titular role. However, it has since been suggested by multiple sources, includingDeadline, that this is not the case, and instead there is a chance that the film will still set cameras rolling next summer instead of this year so it has more time to prepare.Challengersstar Mike Faist was said to be locked in for a supporting role, while an actress had been courted for a starring part alongside Farrell. Check out the plot description, per THR:

“Although it has a World War Two setting, the story is said to involve Rock teaming with up with the female French resistance fighter (are there any other kind?) to find the mystical Spear of Destiny, the spear used to stab Jesus Christ during his crucifixion and in lore is said to have supernatural properties, before the Nazis get their hands on it.”

Sgt. Rockwould follow a soldier from World War II on a high-stakes mission that feels oddly reminiscent ofIndiana Jones, a narrative that is probably much different than what most fans expected from aGuadagnino-directed period piece. However, it seems the $70 million production cost and script were no problem for DC Studios. Per THR, the main reason for the “cancellation” remains schedule-related (it was going to shoot primarily outdoors), Nevertheless, the trade added that there is a chance the project gets re-evaluated at some point, and possibly begins filming during the summer of 2026, which seems to be the way many are now reporting it.

It’s Been a Long Journey for ‘Sgt. Rock’
When DC Studios first announced thatSgt. Rockwas in development, it shocked fans to learn thatChallengersdirector Luca Guadagnino was attached to direct a script written by frequent collaborator Justin Kuritzkes. However, that’s not all, as Daniel Craig was attached to play the titular role and reunite with Guadagnino afterQueer. When the former Bond actordropped out of the superhero film,The Penguinstar Colin Farrell was the next man up to take on the World War II soldier role. It still seemed like a match made in comic book movie heaven before it all fell apart. That said,Sgt. Rock’s journey to the big screen has been a long-gestating one, to say the least.
Decades ago, Arnold Schwarzenegger was attached to star in aSgt. Rockfilm during the peak of his movie stardom. Then, years later, Bruce Willis signed on for the lead role while Guy Ritchie was at the helm. Of course, that project was not called into action either, as it would take another decade before DC Studios revitalized the project with Guadagnino attached to direct. Now, the future of the project remains as uncertain as ever, and it seems that even if it gets made next year, the cast and crew might be totally different.
