The popular Netflix seriesStranger Thingsis the next horror franchise to be adapted for the video gameDead by Daylight. In a new downloadable chapter for the game, three new characters and a map will be included. Of course, the Demogorgon is joining the title as a playable killer, while former high school jock Steve Harrington and aspiring journalist Nancy Wheeler will be available as playable survivors. These two were probably chosen because it would feel tasteless trying to attack the younger children in the game. Also included in the chapter is an exclusive map of the Underground Complex, located below the Hawkins National Laboratory.
For anyone yet to play thevideo game, the concept ofDead by Daylightis a simple one. As an asymmetrical multiplayer game, one player controls a killer tasked with capturing survivors and sacrificing them to an unseen entity in the sky. This is done by way of painfully suspending them on meathooks placed all across the map. In each round, four other players control their choice of survivor, and the only way to live is to repair enough generators to open the exit gates. Obviously, the idea is for the killer to vanquish every survivor on the map, while the goal for the survivors is to save the others and escape. A point system is in place which will reward players based on everything they managed to accomplish in the round, even if their characters don’t make it out alive.
Stranger Thingsis just the latest in a long list of horror franchises to be added toDead by Daylight. Along with theDemogorgon, some of the other available characters include Freddy Krueger and Quentin Smith fromA Nightmare on Elm Street, Michael Myers and Laurie Strode fromHalloween, Leatherface fromThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Jigsaw and Detective Tapp fromSaw, and Ghostface fromScream.Ash vs Evil Deadstar Bruce Campbell has also lent his likeness and voice as franchise hero Ash Williams, although it’s admittedly kind of a bummer to see him get killed.
This isn’tStranger Things' first foray into the video game world. An official mobile game reminiscent ofThe Legend of Zeldawas released in 2017 and was downloaded 3 million times in its first week. An update adding Max was later added to the game to coincide with the release of the second season. Released in July along with the third season was another game,Stranger Things 3: The Game, which is available on consoles and mobile devices. An episodic adventure game from Telltale Games was also in development, although the project wound up getting canned when Telltale laid off most of its staff in the fall of 2018.
In July,Stranger Thingspremiered itsthird season on Netflix, once again earning rave reviews from viewers and critics. There’s no word yet on when season 4 is expected to premiere.
