While Minions fans everywhere are finally looking forward to the release ofMinions: The Rise of Gruon July 1st, Illumination and Universal Pictures have revealed that in just two years’ time the little yellow chaos-creators and their reformed super-villain master will be back on the big screen again inDespicable Me 4.Steve Carellwill be back to voice Gru with an ensemble cast including Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin, Miranda Cosgrove, and Steve Coogan. After waiting since 2017 for a new outing for the Minions and their master, fans will be happy to know that after this summer’s return,Despicable Me 4will be rolling out on Jun 26, 2025.

Obviously, it is too early for any details on the plot of the new film, but with the main cast seemingly on board to return, along withDespicable Me1 and 2 director helming the movie, there seems to be everything in place for another successful movie in the franchise, which has so far grossed over $3.7 billion worldwide.

Minions: The Rise of Grurecently released a new trailer during this year’s Super Bowl, announcing its new date after being delayed since 2020. The movie broke records at the sports event by being the first movie to feature trailers at two different non-consecutive Super Bowls, which cost Universal in the region of $12 million in total. Although it seems that Universal are throwing a lot of money at the advertising of theMinionssequel, which could end up coming back to haunt them, the fact that a newDespicable Memovie is already going into production suggests that belief in the franchise is still strong.

Despicable Me 4 Could Be One Of Illumination’s Most Successful Movies Ever

Illumination Films’ first movie release in conjunction with Universal Pictures wasDespicable Mein 2010. The film was a runaway hit on release with Gru and his Minions raking in just under $550 million on the back of a $69 million budget. While subsequent moviesHopandThe Loraxwere reasonably successful, it was once again theDespicable Mefranchise that blew Illumination’s profile sky high, withDespicable Me 2and spin-off movieMinionspulling in $2 billion between them, whileDespicable Me 3also broke the $1 billion barrier, something that only theDespicable Memovies have done from all of Illumination’s releases.

WithMinions: Rise of Grufinally being released this summer, there is no doubt that the world is ready for more Minions, and with Illumination also being behind the new animatedSuper Mariomovie coming at the end of the year, this could be a big year for the company. Both movies will be looking to push box office sales higher than many other movies to have been released in the last two years. By the summer, it is expected that many of the restrictions still in place in relation to Covid will be lifted, and will be hoped that more people are willing to return to cinemas on a regular basis again. By the timeDespicable Me 4arrives in 2024, it could well become Illumination’s biggest hit to date.
