It’s a great week to be aStar Warsfan. Yesterday (April 17) saw Disney and LucasFilm head to Japan for the Star Wars Celebration event. During the convention, filmmakers like Jon Favreau, Shawn Levy, and Dave Filoni all took to the stage to give updates on their upcoming projects. As well as updating fans onThe Mandalorian & Grogu, and Levy’s newStar Warsmovie with Ryan Gosling, officially titledStar Wars: Starfighter, several other gestating projects in the franchise were also confirmed to be in development. But… will they actually make it to production?

During the panel forJon Favreau’sThe Mandalorian & Grogu, which ScreenRant attended, Disney and LucasFilm confirmed that a staggering six otherStar Warsmovies are currently in active development. All the movies had previously been teased by the studios. But, considering aStar Warsmovie hasn’t hit theaters since 2019’sThe Rise of Skywalker, many assumed that the new projects were secretly canceled.

Will the New ‘Star Wars’ Movies Actually Happen?

The modern return ofStar Warsto the big screen, kickstarted byThe Force Awakensback in 2015, hasn’t quite been the smooth light-speed journey Disney and LucasFilm were hoping for. The sequel trilogy might have been a major box office success, but long-time fans were incredibly divided about the most recent films,The Last JediandThe Rise of Skywalker. The COVID pandemic in 2020 also forced Disney to shift its focus to television, leading to the release ofThe Mandalorian,The Book of Boba Fett, and other Disney+ shows over the past few years.

Fans are desperate to seeStar Warsreturn on the big screen. But, the number of upcomingStar Warsmovies is a bit overwhelming to some. Due to the quantity of films in development, and the fact thatStar Warshasn’t taken over theaters since 2019, some are doubting Disney’s ability to bring all the planned movies to fruition. The Rey Skywalker standalone movie has already been hit with several setbacks, including losing a director and several writers. Sharmeen Obaid-Chionoy is currently tapped to direct the film, and hopefully they can turn the project around after several delays. Meanwhile, Taika Waititi’sStar Warsfilm hasn’t received any major updates over the past few years, especially as the director has several other films in the pipeline, including a live-actionAkiraadaptation.
