At long last, we’re going to get a look atThe New Mutantsnext week. This long-delayedX-Menspin-off has been collecting dust for more than two years now and its status has remained up in the air. Now, director Josh Boone has revealed that we will be getting a new trailer for the movie very soon, in addition to confirming the release date.
It had previously been revealed thatThe New Mutants trailerwas expected to arrive in January. Taking to Instagram, Josh Boone confirmed that is indeed the case. A new trailer, which he personally oversaw, is coming our way on Monday, January 6. Marvel fans who have been curious about this one can mark their calendars. Boone shared the movie’s logo with the following caption.
“New trailer supervised by myself, co-writer Knate Lee and color corrected by the great Peter Deming arrives January 6th. We’re very excited to share it with you!In theaters everywhere April 3rd!”
Even since theDisneymerger with Fox earlier this year, there has been much speculation about the fate ofThe New Mutants. Specifically, there was quite a bit of chatter that the movie would be dumped to a streaming service, possibly Hulu. As we can see in that caption, the movie is indeed going to hit theaters. So, whatever reshoots and retooling have been done in the past couple of years managed to convince Disney that they stand to make more money with a theatrical release. Disney has had a rough go of it with movies they inherited from Fox, as many of them have bombed at the box office, includingDark Phoenix, the final properX-Menmovie produced by the studio. Disney will reboot the mutants within the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the next few years.
Amazingly, the first trailer for thishorror-themed Marvel adaptationwas released in October 2017. Originally, the plan was to releaseThe New Mutantsin April 2018. That didn’t happen. Instead, we’ve heard rumors of warring between Josh Boone and the studio over the creative vision, issues getting the cast’s schedules to align for reshoots and other issues. It’s been a messy situation, to say the least. The cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy (Glass) as Magik, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Henry Zaga (Teen Wolf) as Sunspot, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Mirage and Alice Braga (I Am Legend) as Cecilia Reyes.
At the very least, it will be fascinating to see this trailer and how the movie is presented under the Disney regime. We’ve heard rumors that they’ve cut all ties to the priorX-Menuniverse, so who knows? Maybe this will be more than a one-and-done despite all of the craziness. We’ll be sure to bring the trailer your way next week as soon as it’s made available. Be sure to check out the post fromJosh Boone’s Instagramfor yourself.
