What Happened in Season 1?
Season 1 ofNine Perfect Strangersintroduced nine charactersto a wellness retreat at Tranquillum House. The resort was run by Masha Dmitrichenko, who founded Tranquillum House after being shot and temporarily dying. She was saved by Yao, who’s now her assistant.She brings the nine strangers to Tranquillum House to help heal them from their dark pasts, but the guests soon learn about Masha’s own dangerous past.
Masha’s healing methods involve drugs like hallucinogens, which are sometimes delivered to guests in unconventional ways. A guest named Lars, who’s a journalist, reveals that Masha’s methods were once even more intense, as a guest died under her care at the resort. Masha is involved in a lawsuit concerning the incident, which is not resolved by the end of the season. Another character, Carmel, reveals that she was the one who shot Masha and has been sending Masha threatening texts while at the resort.
At the end of Season 1, the police show up to arrest Masha for her practices at the Tranquillum House. However, because her intense processes did help heal the strangers, they protect her from the police.Masha gets to go free, which is great for her, as she manages to access a hallucination where she could be with her dead daughter, Tatiana. Masha takes Ben’s Lamborghini and drives away with her daughter, though it’s not clear how real this experience is.

Masha’s assistants, Yao and Delilah, leave the Tranquillum House and eventually become members of the Peace Corps. Frances writes a book about the experience, also titledNine Perfect Strangers, which could be a reference to the fact that the first season is based on a book. The real-life book never got a sequel, however, which makes the show’s second season even more surprising.
New Strangers in the Alps
The main detail for audiences to keep in mind before watching Season 2 is that the titular strangers are different each season.The only character confirmed to be returning is Nicole Kidman’s Masha Dmitrichenko, because she originally maintained the Tranquillum House. With Ben and Jessica having taken over the Tranquillum House,Masha is now in a new location, the Alps, with a new retreat.
With Yao and Delilah gone, Masha has a few new people to assist her. Masha’s old therapist, Helena,played by Lena Olin, and Masha’s son, Martin, played by Lucas Englander, help Masha with a new program involving hallucinogens. The nine new strangers' pasts will be revealed throughout the second season, but the actors playing them have already been confirmed.
