Could anotherEvil Deadmovie happen? It’s important not to get too ahead of ourselves, but according to Bruce Campbell, there’s a way in which such a thing could. Currently,Ash vs Evil Deadis airing its third season on Starz, but there’s no certainty that the series will continue beyond season 3. That being the case, Campbell reveals thatEvil Dead 4, sometimes referred to asArmy of Darkness 2, could be in the cards if Starz doesn’t give the green light toAsh Vs. Evil Deadseason 4.
Ash vs Evil Deadis very much in the same spirit as the thirdEvil Deadmovie,Army of Darkness, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. And TV seems to be a very good home for Ash and the world ofEvil Dead. That said, ratings are important and Starz may not feel that doingAsh vs Evil Deadseason 4 is ultimately worth it. AsBruce Campbellrevealed in a new interview, they’re currently in “limbo” and, should the series be canceled, at that point they’ll possibly think about doing a newEvil Deadmovie. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“We’re in the horrible television limbo right now. We’re going to see what the TV gods have in store for us. We’re ready either way. If they take us off the air, we can think aboutanother movie. And if they don’t, we can just keep plugging away.”
TheEvil Deadfranchise is a resilient one, and one that horror fans truly love. What started in 1981 as a very low-budget, very deliberate horror movie directed by Sam Raimi has had an interesting evolution over the years. The sequel, or remake depending on who you ask,Evil Dead 2, was a blend of horror and comedy and was released in 1987. Then there’s 1993’sArmy of Darkness, which really embraced the comedy of that universe and that’s really the cloth thatAsh vs Evil Deadis cut from. There’s also the 2013Evil Deadremake directed by Fede Alvarez which was an entirelynew take on the materialand didn’t star Bruce Campbell, but was generally well received.
A sequel to that 2013 version seems entirely unlikely. So, assumingAsh vs Evil Deaddoes get canceled, this movie that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell would possibly discuss would almost certainly be acontinuationof the originalEvil Deadfranchise. Would it simply pick up whereAsh vs Evil Deadseason 3 leaves off? Would it be more of a direct sequel toArmy of Darknessin some way? Or would it be a return to the horror roots and be more likeEvil Dead 4, as opposed toArmy of Darkness 2, so to speak?
It’s tough to say at this point, as it sounds like Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi and theEvil Deadgang hope that the show will continue. And honestly, that’s likely the best case scenario for fans of the franchise, as anything that could be accomplished in a newEvil Deadmovie could be done onAsh vs Evil Deadseason 4. That said, if Starz does cancel the show, don’t be surprised if Campbell and Raimi start hatching a plan for a newEvil Deadmovie. This news comes to us courtesy ofEntertainment Weekly.
