Evil Dead Riseis all set to deliver on its promise of being one of the most brutal and bloody movies of the long-running franchise as it arrives in theaters this weekend. For directorLee Cronin, it has been a labor of love to be part of the franchise and while many may be questioning the chances of a sequel – especially followingBruce Campbell’s updateon plans for the Evil Dead’s future – Cronin would love to get his hands on another iconic horror franchise.

While speaking toComicbook.com, Cronin was asked about other movie franchises he would like to be part of. As well as noting that he would like to “take a stab” at something within the Lord of the Rings, he would also not be able to say no top taking a walk down Elm Street if he was given the chance. He said:

“It’s a great question because there’s not many, and I definitely don’t want to be the franchise refreshment director. The one that I find really hard to not have … What I did withEvil Deadwhen it was brought to me was I just went and had a good old think about it for a long time. And that was the terrifying part was I might have to say no if I don’t find a story that I want to tell. So the only other one that would put me in the position where I’d be … There’s two things, and they’re tonally very different.I’d find it very difficult to not have a stab at something in theLord of the Ringsworld because I’m a big fan. That’s something that … I feel like my skills as a filmmaker, they’re not bound just by the obvious trappings of horror. I think I could create something on that large canvas. But then back in the horror world, the one that I would find really … and I find it really hard to pass up the opportunity would be something in theA Nightmare on Elm Streetuniverse.”

The Evil Deadbegan life as one of the ultimate low-budget, inventive and ahead of its time horror movies ever made. After spawning several sequels, a TV series, video games and a remake,Evil Dead Risehas proven that sometimes all it needs is a bit of a change to pump new blood into a franchise. The film currently has the highest critic score of anyEvil Deadmovie on Rotten Tomatoes, and first audience reactions have not been too far behind.

While the franchise has made a name for itself as horror movie with some very slap-stick and comically over-the-top set-pieces, thanks in part to its original star Bruce Campbell,Evil Dead Rise pushes audiences to their limitsin the vein of the originalEvil Dead. From early reviews, it certainly seems to have done that, and that makes it increasingly likely that this is far from the last rise we will be seeing from theEvil Deadfranchise.
