The latest trailer for the highly anticipated SyFy series Nightflyers has been released at San DiegoComic Con, and it is enough to get us even more excited for the upcoming science fiction / horror series to release. Like the hit HBO seriesGame of Thrones,Nightflyersis based on a book written by George R. R. Martin, so that fact alone already makes the series more promising.

Unfortunately, George R. R. Martin is not able to be directly involved with the development ofNightflyerslike he is withGame of Thronesdue to his contract with HBO. However, this hopefully won’t be too detrimental. Martin is still receiving an Executive Producer credit for the series, which is certainly a proper credit for the person who originally thought up the story. The series is being helmed by Daniel Cerone, who is best known for showrunning the hit seriesDexter, in addition to playing an important hand in writingThe Blacklist,The Mentalist,Constantine, andCharmed. All things considered, it’s safe to say thatNightflyersis in the right hands, and the latest trailer backs this up rather well.

Shockingly, the TV adaptation ofNightflyerswon’t be solely based on the novella written by George R. R. Martin. Instead, it will be primarily based on the 1987 movie that was inspired by the book. While the movie was a rather accurate adaptation of the book, it’s still interesting to see that the show is taking more inspiration from the movie than the original book itself. Here is the official synopsis for SyFy’sNightflyers.

“Set in the year 2093,Nightflyersis a psychological thriller that follows a team of scientists aboard the Nightflyer, the most advanced ship ever built, as they embark on a journey to find other life forms. Their mission takes them to the edge of the solar system, and to the edge of insanity, as they realize true horror isn’t waiting for them in outer space-it’s already on their ship.”

Nightflyersbegan production early this year, but there is no official update on when it will officially wrap production, if it hasn’t already. Most of the series was filmed in Limerick, Ireland at Troy Studios. While the show is primarily being helmed by SyFy, shockingly Netflix took some control as well as co-producer. Because of this, Netflix is in charge of the show’s airing rights outside of the United States, and has secondary airing rights domestically. We will see how strictly this affects the release further down the road, but it’s possible that the countries that aren’t the U.S. may have to wait until the first season ends in the U.S. to even see episode one.

The latest trailer fromNightflyerscertainly shows a lot of promise and should be able to attract plenty of science fiction and horror audiences, in addition to anyone who has enjoyed any of George R. R. Martin’s previous adaptations likeGame of Thrones. you’re able to watch the latest trailer fromSyFyfor yourself below, and be sure to tune intoNightflyersfor yourself later this year.
