Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Sequel Is Happening with Don't Breathe Director

Last November, we reported that Sony Pictures is finally moving forward with a sequel to their 2011 adaptation ofThe Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, entitledThe Girl In the Spider’s Web. However, this follow-up was being set up without directorDavid Fincheror starsDaniel Craig(Mikael Blomkvist) andRooney Mara(Lisbeth Salander). A report surfaced earlier this month thatDon’t BreathedirectorFede Alvarezis being considered for this project, and today the director confirmed that he has signed on, and it will be his next project.

The studio decided to skip over authorStieg Larsson’s remaining two novels,The Girl Who Played with FireandThe Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, instead opting to adaptThe Girl In the Spider’s Web, a follow-up toStieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy written byDavid Lagercrantz, which was published in 2015. Our report from last November revealed thatSteven Knight(Allied) wrote the adapted screenplay.

The story centers on Blomkvist, who, late one night, receives a phone call from a source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female superhacker, a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering. Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for Millennium, turns toSalanderfor help. She, as usual, has her own agenda. The secret they are both chasing is at the center of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals, and governments around the world, and someone is prepared to kill to protect it…

Fede Alvarezwill be working with longtime collaboratorRodo SayaguesonThe Girl In the Spider’s Web. It hasn’t been confirmed if they will both be rewriting the script originally written bySteven Knight, but they both said they were looking for ways to put their own spin on the story. It hasn’t been confirmed when production may begin, or if Sony has issued a release date for the sequel at this time.
