It has been a couple of years sinceGareth EdwardsbroughtGodzillato the big screen in America, and even though we have to wait a few more years to see a sequel to that movie, we won’t have to wait too long to see a genuine U.S. release forGodzilla: Resurgence(akaShin Godzilla). If you are hoping to see the latest TohoGodzillamovie, you are going to want to get on it, because the movie will only be in theaters stateside for a week.
Fandangoconfirmed thatGodzilla: Resurgencewill be getting its U.S. release from October 11 through 18. The announcement of the U.S. release also came with a new poster, which features a shadowy profile of the newly designedKing of the Monsters, as well as the Japanese title for the movie, and the dates for the limited run. In case you haven’t heard anything aboutShin Godzilla, or have never seen aGodzillamovie, here is the official synopsis.

A massive, gilled monster emerges from the deep and begins tearing through Tokyo, leaving nothing but destruction in its wake. A rag-tag team of volunteers cuts through a web of red tape to uncover the monster’s weakness.
Shin Godzilla, as it is sometimes known, has absolutely crushed it overseas at the box office. According to Forbes, in Japan, the movie has made $5.3 billion yen, which equates to about $51 million. That is enough to make it the highest grossing live-action movie of 2016 in Japan, so it definitely makes sense that it is getting a domestic release. Funimation Films is handling the domestic release of the movie, which was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July. At the time, there was no word on when, or how extensive, the release would be. Here is whatGen Fukunaga, CEO and President of Funimation had to say about it at the time.
“Funimation is extremely pleased to be working withTohoto bring Godzilla: Resurgence to audiences across the Americas. Godzilla became a science fiction icon from the moment Toho brought it to the big screen in 1954. We’re honored to be a part of its rich history.”
This latestGodzilla movieis a return to form for Toho, who has produced 29Godzillamovies overall, including the original 1954 movie, which introduced the world to the monster we all know, love and fear. There have been a couple of attempts from Hollywood studios to make an American version of the monster on the big screen. First, in 1998 withRoland Emmerichat the helm, and most recently byGareth Edwardsin 2014. While neither movie was universally loved, the 2014 version was generally well received, and did well at the box office, bringing in $525 million worldwide. Japanese audiences have responded more kindly toGodzilla: Resurgence, with 2014’sGodzillaonly making $26 million from Japan.
