Long beforeAvengers: Age of Ultronhit theaters, there were rumors that theMarvel Phase Twosequel would introduceCaptain Marvel, although the character had not been cast yet. Just a few weeks before the release, producerKevin Feigeconfirmed thatCaptain Marvelwas in fact in an earlier version of the script, but they felt the time wasn’t right to introduce her yet. If the studio had gone forward with introducing Carol Danvers, she would have appeared at the very end, in a scene where fans first meet the newAvengers, but executive producerJeremy Latchamoffered some more context as to why that didn’t happen, during a Q&A session attended byCollider. He explains what the original ending should have been.
“In really early development there was a notion of there’d be a ton of new people. And then it was like, ‘Well we haven’t really introduced them, we don’t know where they’re gonna come from,’ andJoss (Whedon)kind of did not love that idea. It was an early discussion, and then that kind of became justCaptain Marvel, and then that felt weird just to have one new person.”
That end scene showcased theAvengers' new facility, with Captain America (Chris Evans) andBlack Widow(Scarlett Johansson) leading the team that now includesScarlet Witch(Elizabeth Olsen), Falcon (Anthony Mackie) War Machine (Don Cheadle) andVision(Paul Bettany).Kevin Feigealso added that the subtext of a line delivered by Cap, in regards to this new team, may have slightedCaptain Marvelas a character. Here’s whatKevin Feigehad to say at the same Q&A about how these new members have to learn how to work as a team.
“And also the subtext was, what does Cap say, ‘They’re not the ‘27 Yankees’-well ifCaptain Marvelis there, what are we saying about her? It needed to be [that] certainly Wanda and Vision, I think to a lesser extent Falcon and Rhodey need to learn what it means to be a team, even the most dysfunctional team in history.”
Captain Marvelwas one of the newPhase Threemovies introduced byKevin Feigeduring a Marvel press event back in October.Nicole Perlman(Guardians of the Galaxy) andMeg LeFauve(Inside Out) have come aboard to write the script, but the project still doesn’t have a director yet. Marvel still hasn’t announced who will be playing Carol Danvers yet, but we reported earlier this month thatMission: Impossible Rogue NationstarRebecca Fergusonis the studio’s top candidate. Are you glad that the studio held off on introducingCaptain Marvel, or would you have liked to see her pop up at the end ofAvengers: Age of Ultron?
