Creator David Well’sHunters' debut on Prime Video in 2020 was an epic delight.Hunters, which Jordan Peele’s Monkey Paw Productions produced, was a brilliant super-thriller no one expected. Six months after its premiere, it was renewed, and fans of the series couldn’t be more ecstatic. At the time of renewal, no one realized it would be a two-year wait. So the ultimate question was whether the wait would be worth it.

Huntersis a tale of modern-day heroes arising in an alternative reality, or more appropriately, a dystopian nightmare. But despite the terrifying intense theme, it was refreshing. It was a delight to see a new brand of hero in a world where heroes are often depicted as mere mystical figures with supernatural powers or crazy riches. This story made heroes touchable, one of us. It became easier to see how real heroes could exist in our modern world. No, they didn’t need special tailored outfits or capes. They didn’t need superpowers. They only needed the will and impetus to take down the bad guys. In this scenario, the bad guys were Nazis hidden beneath a cloak of everyday professionalism.

Prime Video’s Hunters

Equally interesting is the revelation thatHuntersis believed to be loosely based on reality. According to an article inBritish GQ, it is likely that The Hunters are fashioned after a group named Nakam. As noted, “Nakam was a group of around 50 Holocaust survivors who set out to murder six million Germans as revenge for the six million Jews who lost their lives during the war.” And given what fans have seen, it seems as logical a premise as any.

In season one, the Nazis gained a significant foothold on U.S. soil. They were organized to the teeth and made moves in ways reminiscent of a period long ago. Although this series is set in 1977, its tangibility raised sensibilities and stoked fears long buried. It was a reach back to pre-1945 before the Allies took down the Third Reich led by Adolf Hitler. In hair-raising fashion, it scratched beneath the mental surface, raising the question, what if? Few had imagined such an alternative imaginative look at a historical shift or such an alternative possibility. It was eerily disturbing especially given the methods employed by the Nazis to reach their goal. “Corn syrup” as a means of genocide was ingenious and hit way too close to home. But it made for phenomenal viewing.
