All good things must eventually end, and it’s about time forHarrison Fordto hang up his whip and fedora, but not before filmingIndiana Jones 5. According to director Steven Spielberg, the upcoming fifth installment of the franchise will be Ford’s last as the cinematic icon. But that doesn’t mean the franchise is going to end, as Spielberg also promises thatIndiana Joneswill continue on without the actor in the future.
Steven Spielberghas been making the rounds promoting his latest movie,Ready Player One, which marks a return to the world of blockbuster filmmaking for the director. He’s heading back to that world next year as well when he begins filmingIndiana Jones 5, which has been in the works for quite some time but is finally, actually happening. While it may not come as a huge surprise, Spielberg said in a recent interview that he thinks this is going to be Harrison Ford’s last time taking on the role, but to still expect futureIndiana Jonesmovies to happen. Here’s what he had to say.
“This will be Harrison Ford’s last Indiana Jones movie, I am pretty sure, but it will certainly continue after that.”
Harrison Ford is 75-years-old. He did an admirable job, in regards to his performance and the action, inIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but that was a decade ago. It’s tough to imagine Ford being able to doIndiana Jones 5, let alone another movie beyond that. So it’s not exactly a shock to hear what Steven Spielberg has to say here, but it’s still a bit of a bummer to think of Ford leaving behind not only one of his most iconic roles, but one of themost iconic roles in cinema history.
That said, it’s been rumored for a long time that a younger actor,such as Chris Pratt, who looked to be the man several years back, could take up theIndiana Jonesmantle down the line. While it may be tough to accept, there’s no real reason that this franchise can’t be likeJames Bondin a way. From a studio perspective, it makes all of the sense in the world. Spielberg also said in the same interview that there would be “nothing wrong” with making the nextIndiana Jonesa woman. So don’t rule out the possibility of seeing Indiana Jane once Harrison Ford is done.
Indiana Jones 5is set to begin production in the U.K. in April of 2019. Disney has set the movie for release on July 17, 2025, which gives them plenty of time to get it done. That also gives Steven Spielberg plenty of time to squeeze in another movie, which could end up being aWest Side Storyremake, but he hasn’t made a final decision yet, as far as we know. Whatever the case may be, let’s just hope thatIndiana Jones 5can serve as a proper send-off for Harrison Ford and can make up for the sins ofIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
