While we wait for an answer, one long-time favorite has now done the unthinkable: ruled himself out of the running. Meaning that, at least, we can cross one name off the list of potential candidates.
Speaking with Collider,KingsmanstarTaron Egerton, who has been a popular fancast for some time for not only James Bond but also various comic book movie roles, quickly put to bed the notion that he would slip into the familiar tux to sip on a martini while saving the world.
“No. And I don’t think I’m a good choice for it. I think I’m too messy for that. I think I’m not— I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure. But I think I wouldn’t be good at it, and I think there’s so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably.”

Egerton’s honesty is refreshing, with the actor thinking himself “too messy” to play the famous spy, ultimately concluding that such a desired role would be “wasted” on him. Besides, Egerton has already demonstrated how adept he is at playing a messy spy in theKingsmanfranchise,for which we’re eagerly awaiting another sequel.

However, while Egerton rules himself out as 007, he’s not against joining other major franchises (thosewanting him to be the MCU’s Wolverinecan continue to hold out hope). The reality of playing Bond, though, is far too big of an undertaking for the actor. He continued:
“But that’s not to say that I don’t have aspirations and plans and also that I wouldn’t be interested in doing something that’s more commercial, because of course I would. I think I’m a period in my life where, as you say, I’ve been probably following the things that speak to me on a creative level a little bit more, but, you know, I’m sure I won’t feel that way forever. But James Bond is quite an undertaking and I think, one, as far as I’m aware, nobody’s asking me to do it. [Laughs] But also, it’s possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest. I do think it’s a big old undertaking, it kind of consumes your life, a role like that.”
While those who wanted to see Taron Egerton as James Bond will understandably be disappointed, the actor can be seen picking up a gun as a different kind of action hero innext month’s crime thriller,She Rides Shotgun, which finds theRocketmanstar as a father who, after being released from prison, is forced to go on the run with his daughter in tow after they’re targeted by his enemies.
