James Gunn says he discussedThe Suicide Squadwith David Ayer. Gunn is currently deep into the production and has shared a lot about his process on social media thus far. Ayer directed 2016’sSuicide Squad, which was a box office success, despite negative reviews from fans and critics. Many assumed that Ayer would take the helm on the sequel, or at the very least connect with DC and Warner Bros. on another project. However, that has not been proven to be the case.
James Gunnrecently held another live Q&A session through his Instagram Stories. DC fans were obviously happy to hear anything aboutThe Suicide Squad, but one fan in particular wanted to know if Gunn had talked about the sequel with David Ayer. “David Ayer is a great guy [and] we have discussed and I’ve told him what we’re up to withThe Suicide Squadat least a little bit,” Gunn said. Gunn did not elaborate on the specifics and did not divulge much about the highly anticipated movie during the Q&A.
The Suicide Squadis going to have a different tone from whatDavid Ayerpulled off in 2016. Ayer’s take on the characters was criticized for being meandering and continued the thoughts that DC and Warner Bros. didn’t really know what they were doing when trying to connect all of these projects and characters. However, a lot has changed since then and the studio is on the upswing after deciding to go against the DCEU idea. Ayer just wrapped production on his upcoming movieThe Tax Collector. From there, it is believed the director will get to work onBright 2for Netflix.
James Gunn will continue to work onThe Suicide Squaduntil it is released in 2021. From there, he will get back to work onGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which was interrupted whenDisney fired James Gunn in the summer of 2018. If things would have gone according to plan, the highly anticipated third installment would be nearing completion for release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4. Now, the movie is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2022 or possibly even later.
The Suicide Squadis scheduled to openin theaters on August 6th, 2021. The sequel will follow Matt Reeves’The Batman, which opens in June. Summer 2021 is going to be a big one for DC and Warner Bros. and one that should be pretty massive at the box office. James Gunn still has plenty of time to craft the movie in the way he sees fit and he will more than likely be working on it until the last minute.
