Earlier this week,Universal Picturesreleased thenew trailerfor their upcoming rebootJem and the Holograms, based on the cult classic animated TV series. If you still find yourself in need of a Jem fix, then you’re in luck, because today the studio put out a music video, set to the band’s song “Youngblood.” The video does feature plenty of new footage that we didn’t see in the trailer, including another look at the pint-sized robot named Synergy.
Synergy represents one of the biggest changes from the animated TV series to the movie. In the original show, which ran from 1985 to 1989, Synergy was a computer that projected holograms, and gave Jerrica her “Jem” alter-ego and protected her true identity. That is certainly not the case here, with Synergy portrayed as a cute little robot. The trailer that debuted last week featured scenes where Jerrica (Aubrey Peeples) is told by her dad that he is working on something, which he’ll show her when she’s older, which turns out to be Synergy.
Thefirst trailerdidn’t feature Synergy at all, but now we’ll have to wait and see how hardcore fans react to this departure from the original series. There are still plenty of similarities between the movie and TV show, with the story following a small-town girl who catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, as she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’Jem and the Holograms, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.
Directed byJon M. Chu(Step Upseries,G.I. Joe Retaliation), the musical adventure starsAubrey Peeples,Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, Hayley Kiyoko,Ryan Guzman,Molly RingwaldandJuliette Lewis. Jem and the Holograms, based on the iconic Hasbroanimated TV series, is written byRyan Landels and produced byJon M. Jem and the Hologramswill have plenty of competition when it hits theaters October 23, debuting alongside The Weinstein Company comedyBurnt, Lionsgate’sThe Last Witch Hunter, Paramount’sParanormal Activity: The Ghost Dimensionand Open Road Films’Rock the Kasbah. Which of these movies will prevail at thebox officethis October? We’ll have to wait and see, but until then, check out the newJem and the Hologramsfootage showcased in this music video.
