With Oscar Sunday approaching, many are wondering who will take home Best Picture. There is at least one former Oscar winner who just couldn’t watch one of the contenders. While promoting her new movieRed Sparrow,Jennifer Lawrenceoffered her thoughts on Best Picture contenderPhantom Thread, revealing that she could only get through the first 3 minutes before turning it off. Here’s what she had to say about Paul Thomas Anderson’s Best Picture nominee, completely trashing his work.
“I got through about three minutes. I put in a good solid three… I’m sorry to anybody who loved that movie. I couldn’t give that kind of time. It was three minutes and I was just like oof… I mean, is it just about clothes? Is he (Daniel Day-Lewis’s character) kind of like a narcissistic sociopath and he’s like an artist so every girl falls in love with him because he makes her feel bad about herself and that’s the love story? I’ve been down that road, I know what that’s like, I don’t need to watch that movie.”
Jennifer Lawrence is certainly in the minority when it comes toPhantom Thread, which has amassed an impressive 91% Rotten Tomatoes rating, with 237 positive reviews out of 260.Phantom Threadhas amassed sixOscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson), Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis), Best Supporting Actress (Lesley Manville), Best Original Score (Jonny Greenwood) and Best Costume Design (Mark Bridges). While we’ll have to wait a few days to see howPhantom Threadwill fare at the Oscars this Sunday, it seems that Jennifer Lawrence won’t be voting forPhantom Thread.
Phantom Threadis set in 1950’s London,Reynolds Woodcockis arenowned dressmakerwhose fastidious life is disrupted by a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, who becomes his muse and lover. The movie has fared well in limited release, and while it did expand slightly with over 1,000 theaters nationwide, it has earned $19 million domestic and an additional $14.3 million internationally for a worldwide total of $33.3 million. While that obviously isn’t a massive box office take, it’s still an impressive take for a movie that didn’t get a massive release.
As for Jennifer Lawrence,Red Sparrowopens this weekend, going up againstDeath Wish, and she will next be seen returning as Mystique in the highly-anticipatedX-Men: Dark Phoenix. She is also attached to star inBad Bloodfor writer-director Adam McKay, where she stars as embattled bio-tech entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes, who became a billionaire for founding the blood testing company Theranos, before her company was investigated. There has been no indication as to when production may start on that project, or what she may take on as her next project. It’s possible that she may return as Mystique in yet anotherX-Menmovie after the release ofDark Phoenix, but nothing has been confirmed yet. The actress made this revelation on Marc Maron’sWTF Podcast, where she also discusses her controversial 2017 moviemother!, how she was first discovered in New York City and much more.
