We could very well seeJeremy Rennerin the role of Clint Barton for some time to come. Just ahead of the premiere ofHawkeyeon Disney+, Renner has been making the rounds in the press to help promote the anticipated series. The show may only consist of six episodes, but that doesn’t mean we won’t continue to see Clint in the future. But what aboutdecadesinto the future?
In a new interview withJake’s Takes, Renner was asked about the potential future he saw in the role. We saw with theX-Menseries how Hugh Jackman played a grizzled veteran superhero as Logan, and we’ll seeMichael Keaton take on the role of an older Bruce Waynewhen he returns inThe Flash. Here’s what Renner said when asked if we might see him as an older version of Hawkeye some day as well.
“Yeah, I love it. Old Man Hawkeye. Yeah, I hope I’m a super joyful Hawkeye. If I’m that old, I hope I just forget all the bad things that happen in life, and he’s just happy. He’s happy Hawkeye. He’s 80, he can’t move, he’s got a terrible limp, but he’s so happy!”
“Old Man Hawkeye” is a reference to a comic book storyline derived fromWolverine: Old Man Logan. That story reveals Hawkeye to be one of the last-surviving Avengers living in a post-apocalyptic reality where supervillains have conquered the planet. The superhero has since gone blind but remains very skilled with his bow. He also had his ownOld Man Hawkeyeprequel story. Maybe if this comic inspires a real movie or series in another couple of decades or so, we just might get Jeremy Renner as Old Man Hawkeye.
“I don’t have a crystal ball, or I’m not a soothsayer,” Renner previously said of hisHawkeyefuture, via Games Radar. “But having Hailee [Steinfeld] come in, and these characters, I think it opens it up for six great episodes for this event type of television. After that, I have no idea. But these six episodes are pretty exciting.”
Hailee Steinfeld plays Kate Bishop with Renner’s Clint Barton serving as her mentor. The series also stars Vera Farmiga, Tony Dalton, Fra fee, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James, Florence Pugh, andAlaqua Cox as Echo, making her MCU debut before spinning off into her own television series on Disney+. Hawkeyepremieres onDisney+on Nov. 24 with its first two episodes, concluding just in time for Christmas with its finale on Dec. 22. It remains to be seen where else Hawkeye might show up in the MCU, but let’s hope he’s not through just yet, leading to us one day getting that Old Man Hawkeye storyline playing out on the big (or small) screen.
