Depp’s career has taken a back-step in recent years due to legal issues stemming from his marriage to actress andAquamanstar Amber Heard. These included a libel lawsuit in the United Kingdom filed by Depp against newspaper The Sun, which Depp lost, and a defamation lawsuit that Depp filed against Heard, which the actor won.

During this time, Depp was removed theHarry Potterspinoff movie series,Fantastic Beasts, being replaced with Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen in last year’sFantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, with Disney reportedly planning to reboot thePirates of the Caribbeanfranchise without him and his iconic character Jack Sparrow.

During the defamation trial, Depp stated thathe would never work with Disney again. “The fact is, Mr. Depp, if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a Pirates of the Caribbean film? Correct?” Amber Heard’s attorney Ben Rottenborn asked Depp during the proceedings back in April 2021. “That is true, Mr. Rottenborn,” Depp replied.

According to this source, Depp’s feelings towards the studio have now softened, meaning audiences could see Jack Sparrow take to the high seas once again.

Does Disney Want Johnny Depp Back for Pirates of the Caribbean 6?

While there are currently noPirates of the Caribbeanprojects in development, a reboot led byBarbiestar Margot Robbie has been discussed. It has since been reported that this idea has now been canceled, leaving the multibillion-dollar franchise drifting aimlessly with nowhere to go. Depp’s apparent receptiveness to a new Disney project comes following a recent report by The New York Times, in which producer Sean Bailey revealed that the studio is “seemingly inching the door open” for Depp to return.

And it’s not justPirates of the Caribbeanfans who want Jack Sparrow to make a comeback, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer explaining why he also thinks the character needs to be involved in any future installments. “He’s just so good at what he does and actors recover from things like this,”Bruckheimer said back in February. “He’s a good individual and he’s a caring individual. He’s somebody that you can rely on and he’s just terrific. I think Johnny is an utter friend and an amazing artist and, again, you go through things in life you wish you hadn’t, but he’s still a talented artist.”

For now, Johnny Depp can next be seen starring as Louis XV inJeanne du Barry, which is set to be released in theaters in the United States by Vertical Entertainment.
