The 2012 production is currently available to stream onNetflixand is now climbing the charts. Something about the way it was filmed, and its plot, gives off true early 2010s vibes, which people have been into lately (for the love of nostalgia). It stars Johnson as Hank Parsons, the stepfather of Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson), who is on a mission to save his long-lost grandfather. Sean is the nephew of a Bostonian volcanologist, Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser), and four years beforethe events inThe Mysterious Island,he and his uncle went searching for Trevor’s missing brother and came across the “center of the Earth.” So, the teen is experienced at traveling to places far, far away from home, which is why going on a journey to find his grandfather wasn’t scary.
In the sequel, Sean is 17 years old and, at the beginning of the movie, finds himself in trouble with the law. Sean’s stepdad, Hank, gets involved, which eventually helps the teen avoid serving time in juvenile detention. The young man believed that his missing grandfather, Alexander, was sending signals, leading him to break into a satellite facility. Hanks assists Sean with decoding the message, which leads them to classic novels and a set of coordinates. They hire helicopter pilot Gabato Laguatan (Luis Guzman) and his daughter Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) to fly to the coordinates while traveling to Palau.
On their mission, a lot happens that Sean and his crew refuse to let get in their way.Journey 2: The Mysterious Islandoutperformed the first film,Journey to the Center of the Earth(2008), at the box office, making $335 million.
