We are still nearly two years away from the release ofJurassic World 2, but we have been learning quite a bit about the movie as of late. Specificplot detailsare still a bit scarce, butColin Trevorrowrecently revealed some of the issues that the sequel will be tackling. According to him,Jurassic World 2will be taking on the idea of animal abuse.
Colin Trevorrow, who directed the firstJurassic Worldand is co-writingJurassic World 2, recently did an interview withTime. During the interview, the filmmaker revealed that the dinosaurs in the new movie will be something of a metaphor for how we as people treat animals in the real world today. Here is what he had to say.
“The dinosaurs will be a parable of the treatment animals receive today: the abuse, medical experimentation, pets, having wild animals in zoos like prisons, the use the military has made of them, animals as weapons. The second part will be a very different movie that will explore new paths. For that reason, it was clear that it needed to be Bayona who would direct it, to have it grow and evolve with his very personal vision.”
As mentioned in the quote,J.A. Bayonais going to be directingJurassic World 2, whichColin Trevorrowrecently revealed was the plan long before it was announced. There is some precedent for the idea of dealing with animal abuse in theJurassic Parkfranchise. InJurassic World, Hoskins (Vincent D’Onofrio) said toChris Prattthat extinct animals have no rights when he was talking about using the raptors for military operations.The Lost Worldalso had sort of an overarching theme of letting the animals exist and to not treat them like property, even though they are man-made creations.
While we don’t know a lot about specific plot details, we do know a few additional things aboutJurassic World 2. BothChris PrattandBryce Dallas Howardare set to reprise their roles, which seems like a no-brainer, especially in the case ofPratt. It has also been stated byColin Trevorrowthat theJurassic Worldsequel won’t be sticking todinosaurschasing people around on an island. It is also likely that the idea of militarized dinosaurs will also be explored further, as many of the embryos made it off the island with InGen. The creative team behindJurassic World 2has also promised that the movie will be scarier, it will include new dinosaurs and it will include more practical dinosaurs.
TheJurassic Parkfranchise had been dormant for 14 years after the failure ofJurassic Park III, butJurassic Worldwas able to totallyreinvigorateit. It was generally well-received by critics and fans, but more importantly for Legendary and Universal, it made a ton of money. The movie made $1.67 billion worldwide, so now we are getting at least two more movies in the franchise, starting withJurassic World 2which is set for release on August 19, 2025.
