Jurassic Worldwas one of the biggest movies to hit theaters last year, taking in $652.2 million domestically and $1.67 billion worldwide, from a $150 million budget. DirectorColin Trevorrowis handing over the directorial reins toJ.A. Bayona(The Impossible) for the sequelJurassic World 2, which willstart productionin Hawaii early next year, with Universal already setting a August 12, 2025 release date. While promoting his new filmA Monster Calls, which hits theaters on December 23,J.A. Bayonarevealed that his sequel will be “darker and scarier” than the original blockbuster. Here’s what he had to say below, teasing examples of how other movies that have been the second installments in trilogies, have gone much darker.
“It will be darker and scarier than the previous film. Obviously when you haveChris Pratt, it will also be very funny. But it will be darker. It is a second step in a trilogy, and the second step is always dark as inThe Empire Strikes Backor theWrath of Khan,' which are the examples you always get. The film takes the story where it has never been before. To me, it surprised me. We are going to places where the saga has never been before, and at the same time we are paying tribute to the franchise. We will take it a step further. There are things that will happen that people are not expecting and they really are shocking.”

This sequel to this sequel toJurassic World, which will bring backChris PrattandBryce Dallas Howard, although no further cast members have been confirmed quite yet. DirectorJ.A. Bayonawouldn’t offer any further details in his interview withEFE, but with filming slated to begin soon, we may hear more about this sequel soon.
Colin Trevorrow, who isn’t directing the sequel but did return to co-write the script withDerek Connollyand produce, revealed in an interview last week that this sequel will be a parable relating to animal abuse and medical experimentation, which falls in line with previous statements he made about the sequel featuring “weaponized animals.” The sequel will also take the action off Isla Nublar, where both the originalJurassic Parkand last year’sJurassic Worldtook place.

J.A. Bayonais directing from a script co-written byJurassic WorlddirectorColin Trevorrowand his co-writerDerek Connolly. Back in November, Universal Pictures' chairDonna Langleyrevealed thatTrevorrowand executive producerSteven Spielbergare developing an entire trilogy aroundJurassic World, but it isn’t known if a script is being written for the third movie. If a third movie does happen, it’s possible that it could hit theaters in either 2020 or 2021. Hopefully we’ll have more details onJurassic World 2as we get closer to production starting.
