A new but unconfirmed report reveals thatUniversal Picturesis rebooting the 1990 comedyKindergarten Cop, but without starArnold Schwarzenegger. The project is coming together through Universal Pictures' 1440 division, which is primarily responsible for producing straight-to-video remakes and sequels such as this year’sThe Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power. Since the project is coming through 1440, it is not expected to get a theatrical release, but the report reveals that it may be developed as a TV series as well.

The originalKindergarten Copfollows a hardened detective named John Kimble (Arnold Schwarzengger) who tracks down the ex-wife of a dangerous drug dealer, in hopes of getting her to testify. He finds himself having to go undercover at the school her son attends, as a kindergarten teacher. The reboot centers on a “leading man type” who, along with his Indian sidekick Sanjit, are hot on the trail of a flash drive that went missing from the Witness Protection Program. When the drive surfaces in a kindergarten class, the lead character is forced to go undercover as a teacher. His mission also puts him together with a beautiful teacher he falls for, along with a slew of Albanian bad guys.

Don Michael Paul (Sniper: Legacy) is directing from a script by David H. Steinberg (Puss in Boots). The producers are reportedly looking for TV actors to fill out the cast, but it isn’t known when production will take place, or when this reboot may debut.Arnold Schwarzeneggeralready has a number of sequels and reboots in the works, withTerminator Genisyshitting theaters this July, and theLegend of Conansequel set to shoot this fall. He is also slated to return for aTwinssequel entitledTriplets, but that project was delayed earlier this year. The actor most recently starred in the zombie dramaMaggie.
