There was a two-year time jump inthe previous episodeofLawmen: Bass Reeves. Bass got a new posse and earned a bounty on his head. By the end, he was tired and ready to go home. Episode five begins with a clear warning to Reeves that his life is in danger and with the apparent fact that some outlaws would rather die while running from the law than face Judge Parker. In most cases, the outcome is the same either way.
Bass struggles between his duties as a Deputy Marshal, father, and husband. Sally is becoming more and more rebellious and ends up in trouble. The new mission makes Bass honor his duty even if every fiber in his body is telling him otherwise, and an old enemy from the past comes back into his life in an unexpected way. Here is the ending ofLawmen: Bass Reevesepisode five explained.

Episode five starts with Bass Reeves and Billy Crow encountering a vivid message – a dead man hanging from a tree with a message on his chest stating that Bass will reach a similar fate. The lawman had known for some time now that abounty was on his head, so the note did not surprise him. They continue their outlaw hunt, and Jimm Webb is next in line.
Reeves and Crow find Webb at the Bywater’s store andface him in a gunfight. Billy gets shot in the neck, and Webb tries to flee, but Bass kills him and takes his boots. Back in the store, one of Webb’s men is severely wounded and is dying. Reeves urges Billy to end the man’s pain and explains how their journey won’t get any easier moving forward.

In the meantime, Dundy Carnival arrives in Bass’s hometown. Jennie and Sally work in the field, and Sally thinks it would be a good idea to hire some help since her father is a lawman now and surely earns good money. Jennie refuses and confronts her daughter about secretly meeting with Arthur. It’s clear that Sally is tired of constantly being told what to do and wants to be able to make her own decisions.
After forty-one days on the road, Reeves finally returns home. He picks his paycheck for all the outlaws he brought to Judge Parker, which is more than $700. However, it seemedlike the lawmancouldn’t catch a break because Sherill Lynn immediately assigned him a new task. Reeves’s new mission was to deliver the prisoner Jackson Cole to the Red River and turn him over to the Rangers. He reluctantly accepts the mission, leaving little to no time to be with his family.

Bass returns to his family, and it seems only Jennie and Sally appreciate him being home. The whole family is dissatisfied that Bass spends so much time away from them, and he’s torn apart between two oaths, the one he swore before Judge Parker and the one he promised before Jennie when they got married. Nevertheless, Billy was already waiting outside the house, as they needed to go after Jackson Cole. Then, Jennie decides to let Sally go to the carnival with Arthur since Bass can’t keep his promise.
Sally Goes to a Carnival, and Bass Delivers Jackson Cole to a Familiar Face From the Past
Bass and Billy found Jackson Cole. However, the lawman and his posse dispute because Bass thinks that Billy does not have what it takes to be Deputy Marshal. Not for now, at least. A big storm began, and the three men needed shelter quickly. Bass uncuffed Cole before they entered the home of Spanish-speaking spouses, and they were allowed to enter thanks to Billy, who knows Spanish.

At the carnival, Sally confronts a little girl who cuts in front of her and Arthur while waiting in line. Arthur was surprised to see Sally’s reaction as it was somewhat violent. Esme was also at the carnival and decided to visit Jennie afterward to confront her about letting Sally wander alone without adult supervision. Jennie did not appreciate the lecture, but Esme told her a disturbing story about strange things happening and black men disappearing more and more often. After hearing that, Sally decided to go to the carnival and find Jennie.
Bass received a prophecy thatdeath was following him, and the lady of the house offered to cleanse his thoughts. He refused. It seemed like he was drugged and started hallucinating. Cole told the whole story about why he killed the man running for Senat. It became clear the man burned his slaves alive, and Cole did not want to let that happen again.
While returning from the carnival, Sally and Arthur fight with four white boys. One of the boys was the brother of a little girl Sally confronted earlier. Later, Jennie and Esme picked them up with a carriage but had no idea what had happened. The following day, Bass left some coins for the spouses that sheltered them. He then cuffed Cole with a heavy heart and proceeded with his mission to hand Cole to the Rangers.
