ActorBernard Hill, who became known for many character roles, including King Theoden in Peter Jackson’sLord of the Ringsand as Captain Edward Smith in James Cameron’s Oscar-winningTitanic, passed away on May 5, according to his agent, Lou Coulson. The actor was 79-years-old.

Hill was born in the working-class neighborhood of Blackley, Manchester, England, in 1944, and grew up as part of a Catholic miner’s family, far away from the glamor of Hollywood. His journey into acting began at Manchester Polytechnic School of Drama, which was soon followed by many television roles in the mid-1970s.

Hill was expected to appear at a ComicCon event on Saturday in Liverpool, England, but canceled at the last minute. Even organizers shared a message on their social media account, revealing they were “heartbroken” over hearing the news of his passing and offered support to his family at this time.

Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, paid tribute to Hill in a statement, saying:

“Bernard Hill blazed a trail across the screen, and his long-lasting career filled with iconic and remarkable roles is a testament to his incredible talent. From Boys from the Blackstuff, to Wolf Hall, The Responder, and many more, we feel truly honoured to have worked with Bernard at the BBC. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this sad time.”
