Before the Disney+ streaming service became the home to a myriad of prestige Marvel projects, the studio’s television division was primarily separate from what was happening in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). During the early days of the MCU and shortly after the massive success of Joss Whedon’s 2012 ensembleThe Avengers, one television show would help to kick-start the studio’s small-screen presence:Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., withClark Greggreprising his role from Phase One of the MCU as Agent Phil Coulson - despite the character’s death in the MCU, but that’s another story. Running seven seasons, the show developed its own dedicated fanbase. Now, one actor from the series has expressed interest in returning to franchise, and not for the first time.
Netflix Boss Shares Harsh “Cheap” Criticism of Marvel Television’s ‘Defenders Saga’
Ted Sarandos has delivered a brutal assessment of why Netflix’s ‘The Defenders’ did not live up to expectations.
In an interview withScreenRant, actor Ming-Na Wen, who portrayed Agent Melinda May in the series, was asked whether she’d want to return to the role. The character was central to the series and had a close relationship with Coulson. Wen’s stunt work prowess was also displayed in several incredible action sequences. More than anything, it’s Wen’s attachment to her character and the rest of the cast that would make her want to make a comeback, saying:

“It’s so weird, when you give birth to these characters. I think I’m very protective of these characters, and somewhere within me, they exist. I miss them a lot. It’s very weird, like there’s a part of me that you know wants to get back into those roles. So, if I ever have a chance to become Agent Melinda May again and do anything [with] that really strong character, I would love to have that opportunity. I love that series.”
‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Set the Precedent For Future Marvel Television Projects
The divide between movie and television projects at Marvel Studios has slowly but surely closed over the years. While characters like Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury made cameo appearances inAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the series was disconnected from the larger events of the MCU. Thanks to the streaming landscape, audience perspective on interconnectivity has changed, especially with Marvel Television introducing new heroes and continuing the stories of characters from the films with limited event series.
This new outlook on film and television and news of legacy characters returning inAvengers: Doomsdayall feel like the perfect reasons to bring the cast ofAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.back. Still, there’s always a chance that the disconnect between the 2013 show and the films may be too great to justify bringing the actors back, especially as they could possibly not be recognized by mainstream audiences. Moreover, the MCU is already showing signs of buckling under the weight of the continuity of its movies and shows, which could further discourage the prospect.

Ming-Na Wen is an incredibly talented actor, and her work on other projects likeThe Book of Boba Fettand the upcomingKarate Kid: Legendsshows that she’ll always have exciting new stories to tell. While it’s unlikely we’ll see her or any other Agents in the Multiverse Saga of the MCU, fans will always have the seven seasons of the series that helped set a precedent for future Marvel Television projects.
