MCU andExtractionstarChris Hemsworthcontinues to carve out his legacy as an action hero as he signs on to lead anactionthriller for Amazon that has been described as a “Die Hardon a submarine.” Which, for an elevator pitch, is a pretty solid one.
TitledSubversion, the action outing is all set to be directed by Patrick Vollrath, who will helm the project for Amazon MGM Studios. The thriller has been written by Andrew Ferguson, and you can check out the synopsis forSubversionbelow, courtesy of THR.

“[Subversion] centers on a once-promising Naval commander (Hemsworth) who is blackmailed by a cartel-like operation into piloting a dangerous submarine carrying illegal cargo across international waters. Thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, the man must outmaneuver blockades and navigate perilous threats both in and outside of the submarine.”
Halle Berry Reveals How Chris Hemsworth Became Her Amazing “Stand-Up Guy” On Their New Movie
Berry said Hemsworth stood up for her during a “moment” in their new movie ‘Crime 101.’
Patrick Vollrath has experience with confined thrillers, having helmed 2019’s7500starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Meanwhile, this will be Chris Hemsworth’s second collaboration with Amazon, with the Thor actoralready set to star inCrime 101alongside Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, Halle Berry and Monica Barbaro.

Chris Hemsworth Remains One of Hollywood’s Most Charismatic Action Heroes
Alongside bothSubversionandCrime 101, Chris Hemsworth is all set to return as the no-nonsense mercenary with a penchant for rescue in the Netflix action sequelExtraction 3. Writer and producer Joe Russo discussed plans for the follow-up last year, revealing that the movie is now in development…but they’re waiting for Hemsworth to have some space in his schedule. No doubt the news ofSubversionwill have the Russos and Netflix putting their heads in their hands…
“Yeah, we’re developing it at the moment, figuring out Chris’s schedule,” Joe Russo said. “Sam Hargrave is back directing. It’s an interesting franchise because he’s a very emotionally wounded character, so there’s good storytelling there I think in respect to his backstory, and, you know, his relationship to violence is one that’s built around self-loathing and guilt. And so, it adds a lot of texture I think, which allows us to tell more stories about him.”

Extraction 3was officially announced at 2023’s Netflix Tudum festival, andwhile plot details remain under wraps, we can no doubt safely assume that it will involve Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake rescuing another poor soul from an impossible situation.
Following their box-office triumphs in the MCU, the Russo Brothers are looking to launch their own major franchises (alongsidetheir return withAvengers: DoomsdayandAvengers: Secret Wars, which will also star Hemsworth), with the pair already developing anExtractionspin-off titledMercenaryand led by Omar Sy. It is the Russo’s hope thatthey will craft their ownStar Wars. As Joe Russo previously explained…

“The intention is that we want to build our own Star Wars. For us, it’s all about the focus on original storytelling and new ideas. If anything, there’s been too much. I mean, I think you could argue we’re in a rut of repetitive storytelling and potential franchise abuse. So, at a certain point, I think the audience is craving new ideas and new stories. And that’s where all of our focus is going post-Marvel - asking ‘what are those new stories?’ Barbie and Oppenheimer showed the appetite out there - audiences want something different.”
