Ever since the final moments ofLokiSeason 2, whenTom Hiddleston’s deliciously deceitful God of Mischief finally found his purpose as the God of Stories and bound together the failing strands of the multiverse, MCU fans knew that they would see him again. After all, if the multiverse story is coming to an end, then at some point that has to all lead back to Loki. And according to new rumors from Alex Perez, what we have all known for years is apparently what will happen as Loki plays an integral role inAvengers: Doomsday.
According to Perez, Loki will become the focus of a race between the Avengers and Doctor Doom, and whoever wins will decide the fate of the Marvel multiverse. While the ending ofAvengers: Infinity Warcame as a complete shock to many – everyone remembers the moment Thanos was able to snap his fingers despite seemingly being defeated – we already know that the climax ofAvengers: Doomsdayis going to leave the MCU in a torn and broken mess and set upAvengers: Secret Wars. When asked in a Q&A session forThe Cosmic Circusabout Loki’s involvement in the upcoming movies, Perez replied:

“He’ll be our McGuffin. The race against Doomsday will be a race to see who gets to Loki first.”
How Loki Is the Key to Doctor Doom’s MCU Plan
Doctor Doom is headed to the MCU, and Loki could be essential to his plan.
Essentially, a McGuffin is a deus ex machina, a plot device or contrivance without which the story could not continue beyond a certain point. It is the gun seen in act one of an Agatha Christie murder mystery, the code that is sent into the past by someone fighting to save the future from machines…the T. rex in the final scene ofJurassic Park. For the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it looks like from his villainous beginnings, Loki is now set up as being one of the most important characters to have ever appeared in the MCU.

Why is Loki so Important to the Multiverse?
While there is obviously nothing confirmed until it is officially announced by Marvel Studios, or until the films are releases, anyone who has enjoyed putting together the fragmented timeline of the Multiverse Saga will already have made the assumption that Tom Hiddleton’s MCU journey will likely end in the upcoming Avengers movies.
Although death is nothing new for Loki, this time, it seems like the perfect opportunity for the character to be giventhe kind of send-off that Tony Stark received inAvengers: Endgame. In the first season ofLoki, which is still one of the highest-rated and most watched projects to have ever debuted on Disney+, the character went on a journey that began when he escaped his original fate via bit of time-travel trickery inEndgame’stime-heist.

Although he was at least partly responsible for unleashing the multiverse (we don’t have the word allowance to go into theWar and Peacelevel of details needed to explain this), in Season 2 he was also responsible for binding together the frayed and dying strands of the Multiverse. This positioned Loki as the most powerful being at the center of existence – literally sitting with existence in his hands. With it being inevitable that at some point the OG Marvel stars that remain in the franchise, Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, etc, will need to step out of the MCU at some point,Secret Warsseems like the perfect – and only time – whenLoki can make an impactful exit for good. With this latest rumor sounding one of the most plausible out there, perhaps the final chapter is about to play out for the God of Stories very soon.
