The Meg 2: The Trenchis coming to theaters this week, and is already giving a lot to talk about. The sequel to the 2018 film directed by Jon Turteltaub has been in development almost since the release of the original movie, but it took a long time to get it done because of the pandemic.
Movies with monsters and specially sharks as the main stars have characterized for an extreme use of blood and action scenes, but it is not always necessary to cross that line to make the story work. The firstMegmovie performed pretty well without the need of taking violence to a gore-style level, and the new installment is trying to do the same.

Speaking with SlashFilm, new directorBen Wheatleyspoke about keeping the franchise’s level of violence at the minimum to aim to a wider audience range:
“I think that in terms of action, it’s like the ‘Indiana Jones’ movies are the high watermark of that. It’s like you feel like you’ve seen a lot of action and it doesn’t feel as a viewer like it’s been toned down […] And I don’t think that’s to do with certification. You don’t have to have loads of blood gouging out of people to make things more impactful, in a way.”
Although maintaining a PG-13 rating may be good for the performance ofThe Megmovies at the box office, it seems like the sequel will not be as well-received as the first one, since itdebuted with a surprisingly low scoreat Rotten Tomatoes.

What to Expect from The Meg 2: The Trench
Jason Statham is back as Jonas Taylor in this new and way more dangerous adventure. InMeg 2: The Trench, Jonas gathers a team to dive into the depths of the ocean and explore dark and unknown areas where the sun won’t reach.
But there’s another group that has already ventured themselves there, an evil mining mission that ends up awakening the fearsome creatures that inhabitThe Trench. Among those terrible animals is not only one but a group of Megs, including the biggest one the world has ever seen.
Meg 2also stars Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels, Cliff Curtis, Sienna Guillory, Melissanthi Mahut, Whoopie Van Raam, Kiran Sonia Sawar, and Felix Mayr.
The Trenchwas going to be explored in another franchise from Warner Bros. Discovery. After the success of the first Aquaman film, James Wan expressed his interest in doing a horror spinoff centered on the dark universe and creatures that hide in the depths of the ocean, but the project never moved forward. Now that Jason Momoa’s character may not even continue in the future of theDCUafterAquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the other movie seems even more unlikely than ever, but at least fans can catch a glimpse at it inThe Megfranchise.
