CanTom Cruisecomplete his real impossible mission and makeMission: Impossible - The Final Reckoninga financial success? That is yet to be seen, but the film’s potential success could be given a boost by its Rotten Tomatoes reviews. Although the film is not released until May 23, the first wave of reviews on the site have been mostly “fresh” and full of praise for the action blockbuster.
While some will say thatTom Cruise’s need for more elaborate, more dangerous, and more absurd stuntsmay be getting to the point where there is no amount of suspension of disbelief will make them seem possible in real life – even though Cruise has, in most cases, performed them as they are seen on screen. And that is exactly the reason why the first wave of Top Critic reviews were all positive.

‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ Overcomes a Clichéd Narrative with Mind-Blowing Action
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team race to prevent a rogue AI from destroying humanity in the latest ‘Mission: Impossible’ adventure.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoningdebuted with a 90% Tomatometer score, which dipped slightly to 87% after 75 reviews. This is possibly not the best sign for the movie’s ability to blow open the box office next weekendwhen it facesLilo & Stitch, as it is almost 10% lower than the score ofDead Reckoning. With the movie needing to blast past $1 billion to have any chance of being considered profitable, this is a mission that may even be too big for Cruise to pull off.

What Are Critics Saying About ‘Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning?’
WhileThe Final Reckoninghasnot hit the heights ofDead Reckoning’s reviews, it is still getting a positive set of reviews, but its current score of 88% is the franchise’s lowest sinceMission: Impossible IIIalmost 20 years ago. The franchise has enjoyed a run of four movies that have all scored between 94% - 98%.
The film delivers some of the greatest action sequences ever captured on film - and let’s remember that they were captured on film and not put together on a computer. However, its excessive runtime of two hours and 49 minutes means there is plenty of “drag” to the proceedings, and some have also pointed out an issue with the “extremely nonsensical” storyline. As theDaily Mail’s Brian Viner puts it:

“The film drags terribly in parts, and could lose half an hour just by cutting most of the lines telling us, in about 100 different ways, that the planet stands on the edge of a precipice.”
MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman scored the film 3/5, saying of the film, “Tom Cruise’s eighth turn as Ethan Hunt inMission: Impossible – The Final Reckoninggives the ageless secret agent an invincible veneer with mind-blowing action scenes and epic set pieces that shred any suspension of disbelief.”

For most people though, theMission: Impossiblefranchise has always been about one thing above anything else - Tom Cruise doing things that someone of his age should just not be doing. As Max Covill ofIt’s The Picturessums things up:
“If you come into Final Reckoning for an incredible story, you’ve made the wrong move. If you want to see Tom Cruise jump out of a plane for presumably the last time, strap in, Final Reckoning doesn’t disappoint.”

While audiences still have over a week to wait before they can assess Cruise’s new movie for themselves, there are already suggestions that this may not be as final a reckoning as has previously been declared. WhetherCruise slips back into the world of Ethan Hunt in some way in the future, as a swan song or not,Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoninglooks to be ready to really start the summer blockbuster season with a bang.
