“The first film saw the Outworld sorcerer Shang Tsung (Chin Hang) and his forces attempt to wipe out Earth’s champions before the big Mortal Kombat tournament between fighters from different realms. That tournament is now officially here in the sequel, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. If Earthrealm loses its 10th consecutive tournament against Outworld, then Shao Kahn will invade Earth and take over.”

Johnny Cage Is the Audience’s Way Into ‘Mortal Kombat 2’

AsMortal Kombat 2shifts focus to Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, it seemsthe fan-favorite will be the protagonist this time around. He is described as a “washed-up Hollywood guy” who is thrust into the dangerous and bloody world of Mortal Kombat. The video gameco-creator Ed Boon discussed Urban’s role in the film as Johnny, and how the character will serve as the gateway into the story for audiences.

“You finally get to see Johnny Cage. His integration into theMortal Kombatstory and universe is a big part of what this movie explores. He’s a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing. Karl, his depiction of Johnny Cage is different than our games in some ways. He’s adding his own flare to it, but I think it’ll feel fresh. There’s like a novelty factor in there.”

In many ways, Johnny will be the novice through which the audiences experience the tournament, but expect other familiar faces from the games, including Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, to have prominent roles. And yes, the Sub-Zero and Scorpion beef will continue to thrive inMortal Kombat 2.However, it seems the titular tournament and its contestants will take precedence. It’s only apprioate that the first all-out brawl between realms will finally take place in IMAX theaters later this year on Oct. 24.
