Yet another book byJ.K. Rowlingappears to be getting a film adaptation, this time by way of her 2021 children’s tale,The Christmas Pig.Rowling is, of course, the author behind the wildly successfulHarry Potterfranchise, which has grossed billions of dollars across eight movies and several spin-offs. She is also the author behind the Cormoran Strike crime novels (written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith), which have been adapted into the hit TV series,Strike.

According toVariety,The Christmas Pigis in the early stages of development with no production company attached to the project as of now. First published in 2021, the book was written by Rowling and features illustrations by Jim Field. At the time of its release, Swift Films, an independent video production company based out of Edinburgh, was hired to create promotional videos for the project.

Miriam Margolyes has reasserted her belief that the Harry Potter franchise is just for kids.

The Christmas Pigfollows a young boy named Jack whose stepsister tosses his beloved toy pig, named Dur Pig, out the window of the family caron Christmas Eve. Though he’s offered a replacement toy called Christmas Pig, Jack longs for his beloved friend, and it’s then that Christmas Pig hatches a plan for the two of them to embark on a journey to find Dur Pig. The pair are shrunk down and travel through the Land of the Lost, along the way meeting all manner of colorful characters, including Santa Claus.

J.K. Rowling Continues to Generate Huge Profits Despite Controversy

Despite her controversial stanceon transgender issues, J.K. Rowling continues to be big business on both stage and screen.Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a play based on the works of Rowling, earned the author a whopping $10.5 million dollars in 2023. Set 19 years after the events at the end ofHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the story follows Harry and Ginny’s son, Albus Severus Potter, during his first year at Hogwarts.

In addition to the stage play, and the successfulCormoran Striketelevision adaptation, the originalHarry Potterfranchise is being rebooted for an upcoming Max series that promises a more faithful telling of the source material than was seen in the films. Back in 2023 in aninterview with Total Film, producer David Heyman said that he hopes it will be something “very special.”

“It’s early days. We haven’t even hired a writer to begin writing. It’s a bit early. But hopefully [it will be] something that’s very special, and gives us an opportunity to see the books, and to enjoy a series which explores the books more deeply.”

For her part, J.K. Rowling seems to be taking everything in stride, and isn’t afraid of firing back at her detractors. Upon news of the newHarry Potterseries, users took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their intentions to boycott the show. Rowling responded as only she knows how, saying, “As forewarned is forearmed, I’ve taken the precaution of laying in a large stock of champagne.” Check out her full post below.
